There is truth to it. The most respectful relationships I've had have been with older men. It's usually guys my age and younger who treat women like sex toys.

Does that mean sex slave? Or does a young woman with a man her own age have to contribute financially and by working together to build a life with him, while the woman with the old sugar daddy gets leisure time and is there to be pampered with his money?
That might be why young women who date men their own age will date one who doesn't yet have too much, even go Dutch, but you won't often see young women with old men who have no money.
I would think that the saying is meant to imply that an old man is more likely to cherish his young wife as a gift. While a young man who (presumably) has more options will treat her poorly because he can easily replace her.
