I don't use a cell phone for keeping in touch with people I care about.Besides I have an address book where I keep telephone numbers and addresses etc.
I do the same.

I got a new phone a few months ago and I only transferred 4 numbers to my new phone (mom, dad, close friend, SO). I've not needed anyone else's. I hate the phone anyways.
I have a little 2x3 address/phone book I keep in my purse. I usually keep peoples phone numbers in my phone, cause I never know if I might need them for help or something. Not in my SIM, because people will swipe your SIM and leave you without one. What I hate, is people who change their phone numbers every month or two. It bugs me. I am not a slave to my cell, and only take it along when leaving town.
For me, if I don't talk to you for a good month on the regular, you're off my contact list and I expect it to be vice versa.
I have the opposite philosophy, at least with Facebook. Many old friends have contacted me a year or two after I accepted them (or they accepted me) as a friend, and we got up to date on each other. Often, I won't call / text a person for a year or two, but it is often worthwhile when I do, for the same reasons. I don't see any point in contact list or Facebook "minimalism".
My best friend who died last year is still on there. Haven't been able to bring myself to delete him off of there yet. Otherwise, I keep a tight list, even if it's distant family I haven't spoken to in over a year. Eventually I'll get around to talking to them again and I'd rather not risk losing their number on a slip of paper.
Sorry to hear that... I also have a contact in mine that I cannot bring myself to delete.
I keep my contacts to people who I really talk to often, as wading through hundreds of people like I see some do to find a number of someone you really talk to all the time is a pain.
I find facebook handy as sometimes I like writing instead of calling, especially internationally. Going through my friends list I could probably wipe out 2/3 of them, nothing personal, just we never stay in touch.
I don't have a lot of numbers in my phone simply because I dislike talking on the phone and avoid it as much as possible.
Now on FB, I had 7 pages of connections... until last week when I purged them down to just 3 pages.
