Well, while the president isn't atheist he is openly anti Catholic.
Is there a war on Christmas? to some extent yes. I never say Happy Holidays I say Merry Christmas and if someone is offended then they are an idiot. I've had people tell me I couldn't hang a crucifix on the wall of my cubicle because someone might be offended.
"Happy Holidays" was a song composed by Irving Berlin in 1941 and sung by Bing Crosby in the 1942 film Holiday Inn. It appears this "war" has been going on for quite a while.
Am I being overly suspicious if it occurs to me that, since Christmas is so popular, especially with the Kiddies, it is an excellent ploy by theists to attack atheists as a bunch of grinches who want to stop everyone having a good time?

I am actively participating in the War on Christmas. I will not say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays as a person working in customer service. I don't celebrate any of the holidays so I think this is best for me.
Christmas is based on pagan rituals, which included human sacrifice. It has nothing to do with the birth of christ. Then again, jesus christ is a fiction as well, so....

The only thing that really, REALLY annoys me is all the "Jesus is the reason for the season!" signage and the fake religiosity that comes along with X-mas (and Easter). I wish all churches would explain to their faithful parishioners that Christmas was hijacked from various pagan celebrations in order to drum up numbers of converts and that, contrary to popular belief amongst children and unbelievably ignorant adults, Jesus was not born on December 25th and is therefore NOT the reason for the season.
So Happy Holidays, Happy Winter, Happy Festivus, Happy Solstice, Happy Saturnalia (we celebrated this in my HS Latin classes ), Happy Yule, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Christmas, Happy whatever doesn't offend you .
From my experience, the "war on Christmas" seems to be waged strongest by fundie Christian types.
I personally have never ever had an atheist tell me not to observe any aspect of Christmas. I have had way too many fundies try. (And fail)
This is America, so celebrate any holiday you want. If you do not like the fact that someone else does observe a holiday you do not, or in a way that you do not, just remind yourself that there is nothing in the world that you can do about it .
I don't think there is a war on Christmas in this country. The problem is that some people in this country have trouble understanding that not everybody has the same beliefs as themselves, and the number of those people is growing at a rapid rate. If someone said merry xmas to me, and I replied back with "I don't celebrate xmas," suddenly I'm the Ahole, and not the person that assumed I share their beliefs. If you want to celebrate xmas, I say go for it. I could care less as long as it stays out of public schools and government.
Ouch, the red pen of angry teacher. Get it together guys!
