How soon will the unaffiliated, which are largely atheist and agnostic, be larger than evangelicals? Will the rate of disbelief rise? Will the unaffiliated be higher in 2 years, 3 years or take 5 years?
It is such a positive thing to see the decline of those believing in the unprovable, unseen and imaginary as society finally transforms to reason and rationality.
The ongoing signals still are looking positive (from the Goddless bastard point of view, anyway), and this is just the start.
Unbelief, let alone atheism, has no cultural credibility in the UK, let alone America. But let it gain some credibility, let it be listened to, let the people compare the arguments for and against religion or none without prejudice, and the rise in disbelief will take off like the Cambrian explosion.
Religion isn't down..it's up. That's the facts.
You are too narrowly focused on a small segment of the global population of the USA. Worldwide stats tell a different story.
Your contention is only supported by "cherry-picking" select areas that consist of a very low percentage of the people in this world.
I see this a lot...mostly by those that don't like religious people and delude themselves into thinking they are not becoming more outnumbered than they already are.
OP did clearly link to a post that says America's Changing Religious Landscape, so it's not terribly surprising that the poll focuses on....well, America.
If you want to change the conversation to the global population, there is another story to be told, but that is not a simple success story for believers either.
Religious faith tends to decline with education and wealth, as do birth rates. I am not claiming a cause and effect relationship between birth rates and religious belief, simply a loose correlation with education and wealth.
As more countries lift their populations industrialize and out of poverty, gain more education, and provide Internet access to their people, I suspect that they will follow in the footsteps of other industrialized nations. Their birth rates will drop, and so will their religious beliefs.
It is a sad commentary that religion thrives on ignorance and poverty, and perishes in the light of knowledge.
I'll put my stock in God as my faith increases everyday, I will hang on to this stock as it will go up in value and will share my fortune with others and split the dividends who want to learn about this great venture and want to capitalize.on it. I will never sell out as I know the future is bright so will always hold on and never trade it until he day I die.

All of which has exactly nothing to do with the OP.
What are your thoughts on the increasing secularist ion of the U.S.?
For myself, I think that it is a great thing.
