Dang. Sucks for your side to make claims they cant back up when given a golden opportunity to showcase all these ruined heterosexual marriages. Between this and the other thread about persecution your record on being factual in your claims is taking a beating.
You asked why the double standard. That initiated a discussion on how your side often tries to link pedophilia and homosexuality , and why there is no double standard.
And that discussion is not relevant to this thread. If you would like to have that discussion I'd suggest you go start a thread on it.
You are being much too kind. The fundamentalist obsession with gay marriage has to do with their desire to force their religious views on everybody else, not with their view of "holy matrimony", as numerous of the most notable opponents of marriage equality have had multiple unsuccessful marriages themselves.
Sure there are controlling / fascistic aspects to it as well. But there is a reason for those fascistic tendencies and a context for them. I used to be a fundamentalist and beliefs about marriage itself at least in the past couple of generations need not have anything to do with divorce, which now enjoys grudging tolerance for pragmatic reasons, not least that divorce is so prevalent that many in fundamentalist leadership find themselves divorced, if only against their will. And it's hard to decry the remarriage of parishoners if it's rationalizable for leadership.
The mystical aspect of an approved / allowed marriage is what they are defending. Because god didn't explicitly sprinkle magic fairy dust on SSM, it is a competing / diluting concept symbolically even though they can't elucidate a single real world harm to heterosexual marriage. The closest they have ever come is the ignorant fear that gays can somehow recruit or corrupt heterosexuals to BECOME homosexuals.
The problem for fundamentalists is that traditional marriage is part of their IDENTITY and part of the basis for their perceived approval by and influence with god. To allow forms of marriage that deviate from god's perceived approval is to dilute the "mojo" of the approved form. That dilution is perceived as an existential threat.
Liberal Christians are freer to overcome cultural habit and conditioning and realize that the Bible doesn't really HAVE a concept of SSM, much less a prohibition of it, so why say it's wrong when the Bible doesn't bother to say so? All fundamentalist dogma about SSM being bad are extrapolations from homosexuality being bad which are themselves based on preconceived readings of a few passages, overlooking that the Bible doesn't dwell on the topic anywhere near as much as fundamentalist preachers do and in any case reflects 2000 to 4000 year old thinking on the subject and the ignorance around such dated thinking.
Which certainly doesn't explain why ONLY the homosexual population make up the overwhelming majority of HIV infections. Heterosexuals should be getting it just as much if they were engaging in the same sex acts.
Nor does it explain why 100% of the LGBT community had heterosexual parents...
The over whelming majority of heterosexuals who do have an STD contract SYPHILIS, GONORRHEA, HERPES, ECT..

I don't know who those evanglicals are that are calling for death, or destruction of property. It certainly is not a Biblical position. Why do you just take them at their word that they represent Jesus?
