Advertisements

I personally have always been turned off by religious signs. I'm not talking about words posted on the signs of churches as that makes sense to me. But bumper stickers, people standing on street corners with signs - those all make me feel like it's an advertisement for religion.

Is religion treated like substance abuse programs where it's a reach out like a helping hand? Call xxx-xxx-xxxx if you need help, etc. Do people need religion, and as such, am I being told I need Jesus? I suppose I personally don't feel I need a savior, and I guess that alone may make me feel negative. And I know there are lost people in the world, but who says what they need to help them?

I know I'm being cynical, but for whatever reason the appearance of religion being sold like used cars just turns me off.

These measures are employed by believers who are following the Great Commission belief system ...it's just another problem one can chalk up to diversity/a free society.

It is only advertising if they say which bank he uses, and what interest rate he gets.

Christianity is a product. Products need customers, so of course it's got to be sold. Hence, on the 6th day, God made Advertising and on the 7th, when everybody thought it was resting, it made TV evangelists.

It's a problem I've addressed as a member of a church. We don't need silly slogans. There are some people who have come along who want to focus on how to get more people to join and start coming up with advertising campaigns. My stance is "take care of the people who are already here and stop worrying about the ones who aren't." When I've said that, I usually get a lot of nods of agreement that overrule the recruiter types.

People will wander in through the door as they will. When they do, make them feel welcome. That's all. It's probably why my little church is a motley assortment of oddballs, but hey. It seems to me that that's how it all started.

I wonder if Americans started seeing bumper stickers like: ALLAH SAVES, MOHAMED TAKE THE WHEEL, VISHNU SAVES, etc,how they would react.
