My mother-in-law gave me a rocking chair when my third baby was born, and I used the chair frequently for a few years. (The baby is now over age 40! ) But I gave the chair away when I downsized my home. I don't miss it; I hadn't sat in it for a long time, and it was just another piece of furniture I had to dust.
I did not have one anymore....several did not survive downsizing. I just got one from Santa for Christmas. I have a new granddaughter who needs rocking.
Heartwarming post, Gentle. Conjures a lovely picture in my minds eye.
I still have a glide rocker that I rocked my babies in.. When I'm chillin' (which I admit is not very often...) I love to sit in it and rock.
Believe it or not, we found an identical one that a neighbor put out in the trash a few years ago. We carried it home and DH replaced the worn out bearings. I sewed new cushions for it and now we have matching glide rockers.
Reminds me of my grandparents.. they had two rockers, positioned to face each other near a bird-watching window... When I went to visit, it was inevitable that they'd be sitting there, watching the birds and rocking away.
I have a solid wood rocker that was in really bad shape when my husband and I saw it in a thrift store . I made an offer of 5.00 and they took it and my husband refinished it and sanded it and put new screws in it and painted it white like my grandmas . I made cushions for it , yes I sew and make things .It now sits in a corner of my bedroom and it is a beautiful piece . Luckily I married a man who can do wood working and we have a neighbor two houses over who makes furniture since he is retired and he puts out some nice pieces as well and sells them all just by putting out in his driveway on the weekend . I love rocking chairs .
Inspired by a quote from another post "You may well fall over dead at 80 while "working" at something you've chosen to work at; I don't see any advantage to expiring in a rocking chair."
It made me wonder.....
How many of us own rocking chairs?
My granddad died in his rocking chair. He was 91. After lunch he sat in his chair and went to sleep....
I do own a rocking chair. An antique I've had since my kids were babies and given to me by a great aunt. However, it's in my bedroom and nobody is allowed to sit in it.
