I've had this same exact experience many times. It could be literally 85 degrees for weeks, then one heatwave of 2 days of 98 degrees and all of a sudden people recall "man it's been 110 degrees for the past month" even though a few days ago it was 85.

During the Summer the Bay Area is the COOLEST metro in the nation, and the Sacramento Metro sits right next to it. I honestly believe we "all", "downplay and underestimate how Great Sacramento really is" because of this.

Our perceptions are altered: An employee where I work complains as such: "I wish it would stop raining", it had not rained in a week. "Its gonna be super hot today", actually, no, the high temp was below 87F, yesterday, and today its gorgeous, Yes, "but the forecast calls for weeks of 100 plus", and "wasn't it 100 a few days ago", no it was not. And, no the forecast called for a day or two of 100, not "weeks".

When it actually did reach 99F one day, she said it was 110F. There actually is a difference in comfort level, ask someone from Phoenix if 99F is noticeably different than 111F. This employee is unable to appreciate weeks, months in the 80's and 90's and instead focuses on a "few days" of 100F, and tells everyone its 100 everyday, when we all know its not, or do we actually believe that it is 100 everyday? Like everyone from the Bay Area, I used to believe it.

Weeks after our mini heat wave the employee was still talking about how hot it WAS, and how hot it might BECOME, all the while ignoring that it had been pleasant more than triple the days BEFORE the mini heat wave, and triple as many pleasant days AFTER the mini heat wave.

In the three weeks between July 6th and July 27th in 2018 we had one single day that was under 94 degrees for the high temperature and night time lows mostly well into the 60s. For that same 3-week period in July 2019 we've had 12 days under 94 degrees with night time lows into the 50s.

You can spin data any which way you want. This summer has been more pleasant than last summer. And anyone that actually lives here and spends a lot of time outdoors has noticed.

When you have multiple days above the mid-90s the heat builds on each day and starts to get really oppressive - the morning temperatures become less pleasant to be outside. That's just how it is and some summers feel cooler than others just like some winters are wetter than others.

Update - July 2019 SACRAMENTO - 31 days

High Temps, How many days of:
100's - 3 days ( Heat Index only 1 day)
90's - 18 days (Heat Index 17 days)
80's - 10 days (Heat Index 13 days)

Low Temps; How many days:
Not a single day above 66F, always cooled into the 60's and 50's.

Overnight and in the morning, Sacramento never stayed as warm as the 70's, 80's, or 90's like other cities across America.

70's - Zero days
65F to 66F - 2 days
63F to 64F - 6 days
60F to 62F - 13 days
50's - 10 days

John, like I said, marginal differences between last summer and this summer. It appears 2019 has been slightly cooler than 2018, so far, but we still have August and Sept. Only time will tell, there is no need to "spin it".

If the AccuWeather long range forecast holds, then Sacramento will have 26 August days in the 90s and 4 days in the 80s. That would be hotter than average for the month, but it looks like it won't come close to last year. Last year looks to have had 74 days above 90f (including 100f days), with a long stretch of 47 days that had only 2 or 3 days below 90 (kind of how Majin above was saying people have perceptions that it's hot for weeks when it's not; he seems to have the same experience in reverse). So far, 2019 has had only 30 days at 90f or above, which is very mild. Even if we added 26 more days in August and some more in September, it's unlikely we'll come close to that, and there certainly haven't been such long stretches of heat as last year.

In fact, 2018 was pretty awesome. It was consistently 70s and 80s in April, May, October and early November +Nov 1st started at 83f) and 80s/90s/100s in June, July, August, and September. This year had a much longer and cooler spring (statewide).

Chim, this is some of the worst exaggeration you've ever made! 70s, 80s, and 90s for overnight lows "across America?". Anything above the 70s in almost all of the country is highly unusual. In fact, I'm only finding Phoenix, one of the hottest cities in the world, averaging 81f. Yes, they've had 90s for lows, but that's far above the norm. The next hottest cities in Texas average lows in the 70s. But even much of the mid Atlantic and Southeast (Charlotte, Atlanta, DC) averages in the upper 60s. Sure, they'll get 70s regularly with that average, but not 80s and 90s. Very few cities are as hot as you make it seem. They're a good ten degrees warmer at night than Sacramento, but not 20-30 degrees. (Yes, humidity, bugs, etc make it less comfortable, but just going on facts here).

Meanwhile, I've got the windows open all night enjoying free cool air at 62f in inland SD this morning. So I can appreciate the California summer nights. It's almost always cool by daybreak in inland California.

I never said every single city across america is in the 80's or 90's overnight and your post suggests thats what I am saying.

Rather look at in this way, Sacramento very very rarely stays as warm as the 70's, while often many many other cities do stay into the 70's. Sacramento never stays as hot as the 80's while a good portion of the South and Southwest does. Sacramento never stays as hot as the 90's when a handful of cities across the south and southwest do.

You never account for heat index which almost always brings higher numbers(5-15 degrees higher) for much of the rest of the USA and brings lower numbers for Sacramento.

No exaggerations, you are reading too much into it, saying things I didn't say or mean, and interpreting things I never intended.

No TS, your information is often "exaggerated". I don't need to exaggerate because I base everything on actual data, and often I just post the data, and let others misinterpret or "spin it" themselves as you have just done. (Gladly you rarely do this, so I'm a bit surprised)

In an average summer in Sacramento, how many days should we expect high temps over 100? and over 90?

@shelato- guessing 100 days each year over 90 degrees and 20 over 100. Almost as bad as east Texas.
