Thanks Bud, I'd forgotten reading they were trying to recover all the pieces. Glad they have plans to put it to use in Hemisfair grounds! Of course Jimmy Johnson went on to coach the Cowboys to 2 Super Bowl Victories!!
Just messin' with ya'!!! Ha! Ha!

In 1988 the carousel was auctioned off in pieces. The San Antonio Carousel Foundation is currently in the process of buying and restoring all the original pieces. Space has been allocated in Hemisfair Park for the historic ride to operate once it is restored." This is good news indeed and if you're interested in more park history go get a copy of Ed Gaida's wonderful book titled JUST FOR FUN! Jimmy Johnson's Playland Park. It is a great book with lot's of fotos from the beginning to the end of that magical place out on N. Alamo.
Thanks for the information about the carousel, and its amazing its been almost 30 yrs since playland closed.

Let's remember that Mr Johnson has passed away, and we should have some respect for him.

I know but that comparison has nothing to do with this thread.

Btw, I recently heard that there may be plans beginning to put up condos at 2222 N. Alamo which is okay I guess but I sure wish another Jimmy Johnson would come along and put in another Playland or something similarly more useful than some place merely to call home. Condos we got, Playlands we don't got!

Bud I heard about that also, too bad we are losing many landmarks in town to high priced condos.

Does anyone remember BarQ on West Avenue? They had the best barbecue. I still live in the same neighborhood and remember many of the places you are mentioning (not Connies Taco's though)

While I did enjoy a round or two (or three or four) on the carousel, the main attraction for me was always the Rocket. Great classic, fast, scary, rollercoaster. I wondered what happened to it until I saw a show on the countries best wooden coasters on the Discovery channel. Lo and behold, the Rocket lives!

"The Rocket -- Playland Park, San Antonio, Tx. (1947-1980) Built in
1947. At its opening it was hailed as "the largest roller coaster in
the world." The first hill measured 78 feet and there was some 3200
feet of track. Playland Park closed in 1980 leaving The Rocket
standing silent.

In 1985 Knoebels from Elysburg, PA undertook the huge project of
dismantling the ride and moving it to Pennsylvania. Knoebels staff
began taking the ride apart in January 1985. The dismantling
proceeded smoothly through February and March. Just three months
later, on June 12th, the renamed Rocket’s (The Phoenix) orange train
made the first successful trip around the reborn coaster. It opened
to the public on June 15th to rave reviews and has been consistently
ranked as a top ten coaster ever since."

I've been racking my brain to remember where a bridge was that was just South of downtown. It might have been on S. Presa....I just remember it being VERY narrow and VERY old. This was back in the 70's....and I'm sure it's long gone. Does anyone remember that bridge? It was so narrow that it was very unnerving driving on it with two way traffic. Or maybe it was even one-way?
Sorry....I was in high school and not familiar with driving around downtown at that time. It would be even more awesome to see a picture of it....but I suppose I'd need to know the name first!
