The Fredericksburg Road Drive-In was the first drive-in in San Antonio. It opened in 1940, known as the Drive-In Theatre. It kept that name until 1947 when other drive-ins opened.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of the drive-in theatres in San Antonio. Moderator cut: website

Cool. I actually like photos of abandoned places like this.

Where was it located?

I'm also curious about the buildings. There was a small building that I assumed was a snack bar. But there was also a photograph of a larger snack bar or cafe inside.

What was the large two story building? Thanks

Ozzy:
Your looking at two different theatres. I just discovered the remains today of the old Starlite Drive-In in Schertz, TX. It is along the hiway from Schertz through Marion on to McQueeny and then Seguin. The larger bldg is part of the Mission Drive-In in south San Antonio on Roosevelt Ave, just North of Mission San Jose. The Mission was opened in 1947 and closed in 2007. It was our last remaining drive-in until Santikos sold it to the city for some $3,000,000. It is to be razed and everybody is cutting up the property for their own glory. Mission Park Service, an Hispanic university, veterans group, you name it. And we loose our last remaining drive-in. I had a drive on to save it, but no one listened.

I still remember the telephone number to the Capitan Theatre...GE3-0551 (yes..I said "GE"...I'm old ok?). My mom would have me call to find out what was showing. As far I as I remember, all they showed were Spanish movies...Cantinflas, Tin Tan, etc.
