Hey buddy...thats Texas as a whole in general. Didn't you hear about the 52 car pileup that happened in Arlington along I-20???

Or the 30-car pileup along Hwy 360?

If you have "been" to Houston then you dont really know what it is to actually HAVE to live here and WORK here. The people are crazy.....and to put it nicely, it is actually a living h3!!h@l3! Miss skyscrappers in the downtown area? I work in one...it is a death trap. Cant wait to get back to SA. Soon......v-e-r-y soon.

Likes -

The food (so many great choices)
The weather
The kindness of people - We were geocaching and were pulled off the side of the road... a guy drove up and asked if we needed any help or if we ran out of gas. Very kind.

Dislikes -

The town looks and acts like a ghetto. Buildings are old and instead of building infrastructure, the town expands.
Nothing to do downtown. This is one of the least "hip" cities I've ever lived in.
Stray dogs are everywhere and animal control does not care.
Lack of grocery store choices.

I had visited San Antonio a few times in the past year or two, because some friends had moved here, and now I've moved here a week or so ago. As a new Louisianian expatriate, here is what I think...

Likes:
major lack of stormy weather (though drought is bad).
gorgeous hill country on the north side (moved to Stone Oak).
somewhat decent traffic on freeways.
very friendly people in all parts of town.
I like the "Southwestern" building style, though it does tend to get repetitive.
Downtown isn't huge, but I think the buildings are unique and cool-looking.
Lots of good food, though it AIN'T Louisiana (Acadiana Cafe is decent so far).
lack of bugs at night!
family atmosphere and good public schools.
thick, gorgeous Latina women!!! (though my fiancee with me is already the most amazing Latina on Earth!).
nice places in the region to go camp or canoe

Dislikes:
dry weather making my Louisianian amphibian skin irritated
my AT&T service is worthless, thus I must change phone companies
ridiculous amount of property crime everywhere
drivers seem to be kinda stupid, slow, and dangerous
I have to watch the Gott-damned Cowboys here instead of my beloved Saints... WHO DAT?!!!

You folks complaining about ghetto... need to visit New Orleans, Baton Rouge, northern Lafayette, most of Shreveport, Alexandria... Maybe S.A. is ghetto by Texan standards, but it's pretty freakin' clean to me I guess by Louisianian standards. You KNOW when you're about to get shot in Louisiana cities, but here, I'm not always as sure. Sure, the 1604/281 interchange is retarded, but drive in Baton Rouge at rush hour and you'll get visions of Austin. Infrastructure is an epic failure in my beloved home state. So far, I'm likin' it here, so hopefully I'll keep lovin' it and so will my fiancee (wife by June!). There's a lot to do here, so I'm sure we'll be busy with adventures! Glad to be here, and Go Astros!

Default I agree with the Louisianan,a very good post,

San Antone doesn't have a ghetto area at all. Expecially so, in the true sense of the word.
Chicago, Detroit, cities like those these have true urban blight, and have true ghettos. Without getting into the statistics of crime, unsolved murders, city budget deficits etc. these cities contain within their boundaries- abandoned 50 story buildings, stores and thousands and thousands of homes. Entire neighborhoods are sometimes abandoned, it is a sorry spectacle- these areas and sometimes they truly resemble in parts third world countries in many ways.
Ghetto is a catch word used here in many posts by persons who use it as if
it is an interchangeable word to notate lower middle class or something negative. What unneeded cynicism, snide remarks and arrogance
and pooh-poohing. San Antonio is a great place and one of the most recession proof areas in the country.
I believe ghetto a term used mainly by youngsters- with a view from their limited wisdom.

People from ghettos would exchange places with San Antonians, if they could. Not to mention tenfold the opportunities for honest work. There are many, many things to like and appreciate about San Antonio, this is only one of them.

This thread is titled "what do you like/dislike about San Antonio" not "Huckster's definition of a ghetto". By the way, if you notice the majority of people on here don't live on the South side of San Antonio. Why? Because it's low income, high crime. When I drive through Converse (the town I live in) there's mattresses, garbage bags, trash all over the place. While we don't have the traditional "block" style ghettos that Detroit and other large cities have, San Antonio sure does have it's own ghettos.

San Antonio is a poor city (in my opinion) compared to other cities of similar population.

I lived in the Southside for approximately 4 years (lived there from September 2006 to June 2010); we moved into a tax credit apartment complex at the time because of our income and we were allowed to stay there even after our income grew. We used the low cost of rent to save money for a down payment for a house, pay some bills and pay off my student loans. Never had an issue with anyone or with crime.
I would have gladly moved to the Southeast side of SA near Military and 37 but I need to stay close to my mother in law who is battling colon cancer and she is closer to the 151. We grew up in the deep Westside (hubby and I but never knew each other until as adults) and we never had any issues either. If someone is hanging out with the wrong crowd, trouble is bound to happen.
