Wasn't there like a big dead fish hanging on the wall of the tv set?

Does anyone remember Grandma's Cookies in the 1960's? At my favorite little mom & pop store that was located at the corner of Dawson & Pine, there would be this red & white colored see thru plastic cylinder shaped cookie bin. It was labeled Grandma's Cookies.

Inside it had loose cookies that the customer could choose. Prices for the various cookies were 2 for a penny, a penny and the big ones for 2 cents. The owner would put the cookies in a teeny brown sack and off I would happily go home munching on em.

At this little store Mom would also buy pressed ham and round cheese by the slice. The cheese & ham were for our school sack sandwiches.

Not to forget the old Coca Cola box full of Hippo Size, Barq's, Dr. Pepper, Grapette, Coca Cola, Buck Brand & Nehi soda bottles. Way before the dawn of the can and plastic bottles. Somehow a soda just tasted better in a cold tall glass bottle. And you could return for bottles for cash for candies!

Delaware Punch was also a favorite. There was a myth going around in the early 60s that carbonated drinks gave pimples, so many teenagers took to drinking Delaware Punch!

I have a few old Buck Root Beer bottles, as well as old RC and Nehi, a Grapette, Squirt, and quite a few others. Remember Mr. Cola? It was the first 16 ounce bottle of cola available for the same price as the other's 10 ounce bottles. I have one of those, too. Hippo Size were originally 13 ounces (double the size of Coca Cola's 6 1/2 ounce size), and later went to 16 ounce bottles. I do not have ANY Hippo Size bottles. I saw some advertised on Ebay for more than $20. I think Hippo was a San Antonio only brand.

Coke was the last major brand to offer 10 ounce bottles. The called it King Size. I remember Anita Bryant singing about " Coke in the king is right for you, Coke in the king is a best buy, too. Coke in the king is a great big value. It refreshes best"! I have a few 6 1/2 ounce Coke, Pepsi, Seven Up, and Squirt bottles.

Things go better with Coca Cola!

My brother would buy a 5 cent bag of Lance's peanuts and put them in his Grapette.

When the teen show Swingtime was popular he switched to Big Red. I'd go to the store to buy him a bottle of Big Red made by Barq's. He would swig his Big Red while watching Don Couser.

The bottles of Hippo sodas were a glass art. The huge double sided embossed hippo on the bottle. Those bottes for some reason were always nice and shiny, no wooden case wear.

I remember that you would often get Barq's Root Beer in a Big Red, or Sun Tang Orange soda bottle, Or Big Red in a Barq's Bottle, or any combination thereof. The bottles were identical except for the label. I guess it was too much trouble to separate the bottles after they were sterilized and got refilled. I remember the Barg's/Big Red/Sun Tang bottles had diamond shaped ornamentation cast in the glass.

Default In the sixties and seventies at the LSB,

One could go to the Lone Star Brewery , tour the hall of horns
and Drink Free cold beers served from the tap on the brewery grounds in
the buckhorn saloon.
You were always welcome unless you came more than once a week-
