I attended a conference some years ago where a billionaire investor gave a speech. His advice to people just starting out in their careers was to live in a cheaper state (his example was TX) for a good quality of life (buying a home/raising children) and low financial stress. He said, then you can afford to go on vacation several times per year. "Planes fly to the beach every single day from Dallas".

I get this, and for some it’s smart, but I never bought the whole just take a few vacations a year?

Personally I’d rather have the option of living where people want to vacation and doing what it has to offer daily/weekly, versus living where it’s crappy most of the year, and/or there’s nothing out of the ordinary in the area to offer only to look forward to a vacation(s)? I experienced this mindset when I was in Michigan for college.

And I agree with you, and follow that mindset. Hence why I live here.

But if you can't truly afford to live in SD, raise family and take advantage of everything it offers, then why struggle because "it's nice here". GTFO.

I'd rather live a nice comfortable life in another state, than struggle financially in SD. That's just me.

haha - yup, that's my thinking as well (grew up in Michigan, and spent the teenage years in the inland part of L.A.).

There's no replacement for NOT being in a crap climate for large parts of the year (e.g. extreme temperatures and humidity levels - either swamp-like, or desert dry). You really don't appreciate it until visiting somewhere else, where it's NOT taken for granted.

I tried this for a year. Lived in Oklahoma for my wife's job. Made well enough money to take several trips per year, but it was still a pain. I had the money, but time was an issue and also, when I came back to SD, I had to fit surfing in as well as seeing my family, all without a car. So I'd fly into SD, get a hotel, have my friend pick me up for surf, then after a day or two I'd have to take a train or bus to Beaumont or Hesperia, never of which are close to bus or train lines. Then I have a friend in Yucaipa, so if I wanted to see him I'd have to borrow my mom's car, but she needed it. You see where this is going. Not too bad in theory, but not great in practice. I figure I'll live here until I'm tired of surfing, then I'll find a quieter place.

Why didn’t you rent a car?

Not every other state has horrible weather like Michigan. I’ve been in Boise 2 years now after living my whole life in so cal. In OC during the summer I went to the beach maybe 5 times. S Idaho is called the banana belt because it doesn’t get the severe weather of N Idaho Wa Wy, Montana etc. It’s considered high desert and the weather is very tolerable. We don’t have a beach but inner tube down rivers in the summer. Going to Ca or Fl for vacation is all I need.

I tried that, but where my family lives there also aren't any major car rental agencies very close, so I'd still have to get someone to meet me and pick me up unless I wanted to rent from enterprise, which I hate. Not only are they super expensive, they try to upsell you like crazy and waste your time.

Ditto. When my life consists of shuffleboard, bingo, and macrame, I’ll move on to a cheaper locale.
