In another thread, a fellow City-Data Forum member implied that the dating scene in San Diego is not good for men, telling me to google "Man Diego." Well, I did google "Man Diego," and all I found was an UrbanDictionary.com definition stating, "Despite having beautiful weather and beaches it has very Asexual overtones due to its extremely conservative nature and dispropotionate number of males to females. The male to female ratio currently hovers at about 7 to 1." (Urban Dictionary: Man Diego)

Well, I pulled up the official 2010 Census figures and discovered that females comprise 49.5% of the population of San Diego city (San Diego (city) QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau) and 49.8% of San Diego County (San Diego County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau).

So, can someone explain the phenomenon of "Man Diego"? Is the non-resident male military population so vast as to be no match for the city's 1,307,402 residents or the county's 3,095,313? Are all the "Man Diegans" hanging out in the wrong places? Do most of the women avoid bars, favoring other types of activities? What gives?

Lived here for 10 years.

Never understood the expression.

There seems to be plenty of women to me.

Hmmmm.....I am gay and have always been told SD is a great city for us...could this be the source of the expression? Truth be told, however, I have never heard of this expression before in the Gay community.

I lived in San Diego for 10 years and the dating scene is not as bad as where I am now (Sicily, Italy). I did see plenty of single and available women out at the bars and clubs. What I did notice however, is once you start dating them and getting to know them, you realize that they have plenty of options. What I also noticed was that it seemed like the good ones were taken, while the single ones (even the good looking ones) had baggage so that's why they were single.

I was also younger and in my prime when I was living there (most of my 20's). I'm not sure how the dating scene back there in my 30's would compare to back then. I hear its pretty brutal now back in the States in general with girls in their early 20's (majority of the girls in the clubs) with their attitudes.

A friend of mine from San Diego met a woman in Ketchikan, Alaska and married her. They have a wonderful family. Ketchikan, Alaska is possibly the worst area to meet a companion, but he managed to find the love of his life there without worrying about statistics or stupid catchphrases.

Ketchikan has about 8, 000 people living there, San Diego has 1.3 mil just in the city. Do the math.
