Pretentiousness in the Bay Area isn't definied by conventional status symbols (Cars, homes), it is more like status choices:

I eat locally produces food
I shop at Whole Foods
I spent my weekend hiking at Mount Diablo/Marin/Santa Cruz Mountains
I drive a Prius, because I am green
I compost 90% of my trash
I never eat at chain restaurants
I haven't had fast food in 20 years

LOL... these days I get really annoyed if I go somewhere out of SF and I don't find three different kinds of trash cans when I want to throw away something..
