Hey everyone..thank you so much for all the input. We just finished our very quick trip to Santa Fe and tried to stuff ourselves silly. We arrived on a Sunday and were so desperate to eat that we picked the 1st place that was actually open and that turned out to be Cowgirl BBQ and it was very average..totally our fault since we didnt come prepared with the knowledge that most places werent open for dinner service on a Sunday. However we made up for it big time and had dinner the following night at La Choza which made up for Cowgirl's flop. The green chile stew was absolutely delicious with the right amount of heat..it hit the spot and oh my the sopapillas were heavenly. Also, I could have had a whole bowl of carne adovada all to myself. We had breakfast at Tecolote Cafe and loved the local vibe/atmosphere and need I say more about the bakery basket!! If all fares well, we hope to make a return trip very soon. Thanks again everyone!!
So, you took my suggestions! LOL! Those are two of the best places in town. Glad you enjoyed them!
True, the Plaza Cafe is temporarily closed - but only in it's original location. After the fire they opened up a branch at Zafarano, off Cerrillos Road just west of the Regal 14 Cinema. Check it out, it's not bad.
Thanks for reminding me, I have yet to check out that location. Actually it opened before the fire downtown, because I remember the last time I ate there I asked about the other location and it was already open by then.
According to their history page, they opened a south side location originally in 2003, and then moved to the current location in the summer of 2009. How time flies!
No kidding! I rarely eat on that side of town, although I do go to the Regal theater a lot, so I didn't realize the Plaza Cafe was there until I found it and ate there a couple of months ago.
Any recommendations on the best bowl of chili in Santa Fe (doesn't matter how "authentic" -- ground beef, beans, whatever)? Sorry if this has been asked before -- I did a search and got a billion unrelated results.
I had a great bowl of Green Chile Stew at The Plaza Cafe earlier this week.

If you mean Texas-style "chili", I wouldn't know the answer to that. I have never seen or ordered that in Santa Fe.
