Yeah, compared to Houston, it feels like there is no crime here at all!

So in the opinions of the wise of CD, what would curtail some of this? More police? What about cameras in the downtownish touristy areas? Maybe it would be too big-brotherish for some, but if the cameras were restricted to the tourist path...maybe it would prevent some or at least aid in apprehension. Like the Pioneer Square shooting--that area usually has so many people all hours--and no witnesses?
The party stretch of Belltown seems to have random attacks from time to time, with police asking for witnesses to come forward...but the cases seem to go cold.

I can't believe people are finally waking up to the fact that seattle is the violent ghetto of the north.

If you're talking about the 21-year-old woman killed a few weeks ago, she was shot to death in a drive-by, not beaten to death.

I guess I should mention to you guys--I only showed you st. Louis because I grew up in that area, I didn't just pull a random dirty city out of a hat but Seattle should never compete with STL and probably won't.

As sad as the recent random shooting deaths of the girl in the International District and the father in the Central Area were, and as scary as the rash of drive-bys in--where was it, Rainier Valley?--were, I still have to say I feel pretty safe most everywhere I go. I feel less comfortable downtown or in the ID by myself at night than in the day, and I have not been to Rainier Valley/Rainier Beach at night yet, but in the day it feels just fine to me.

That said, the violent crime rate is generally super low in Seattle compared to other American cities, statistically and factually speaking. And it is confined mainly to the ID, the CD, and Rainier Valley/Rainier Beach. I haven't heard of any major crime in White Center and I spend a bit of time out there at night and it feels pretty safe and quiet to me, but supposedly that is another concentrated pocket for crime occuring.

But the fact that we're worried about these problems, as a community, is encouraging. Saying, oh... 20 murders is just fine, should not be acceptable. As a community we should be striving for zero. We should be striving to create a culture where violence is not acceptable and where there are good alternatives to joining a gang and squandering your life away that way.

BTW, that video is awesome! We had our own superhero and now our own supervillain! That's why I love Seattle!
