Is it better or worse?
There's a negative trend in violent crime and it's ridiculous.
The Roosevelt shooting today was 2 miles from my daughter's school. I've never liked city living and even less so now.
No, I'm not going to stop. Many of us relocated to Seattle because it represented a better alternative than what we came from. The fact that I feel safer in a larger city than I did in my old small town speaks volumes about the comparative experiences of the residents. Today's happenings were rare and newsworthy and something we should talk about, but the fact remains that violence in cities like Chicago, New Orleans, and Memphis are so commonplace that it doesn't make NPR or Yahoo headlines unless it was 50 people killed in an hour.

Let's all take a deep breath. The all-time high in Seattle murders was 64 and it occured some 20 years ago, in the mid 90's. Yes, many of those were gang-related, and many of those today are also. Is Seattle suddenly an unsafe city? No. As a native Seattleite, I would suggest we all get a grip. Seattle is still a safe city, despite what the media feeds you.

Let's keep in mind that today's murders - in two locations - were committed by one man and it sounds like it may have been domestic violence. It wasn't random.

Yes people die everyday but a natural ending to life is far more acceptable than a violent, senseless, tragic death.

The shooter has died, and there is one more fatality from the cafe. Very sad.

Not to mention how many the hospitals routinely kill. Anybody know those figures? A lot is made of traffic and gun deaths. But hospitals kill more than both combined. Just by stupid mistakes.

It turned out NOT to be domestic violence but once again some mental case let loose w/2 guns. Just not sure how to read your assumption that awwh domestci violence is so acceptable now ?

Perhaps you should re-read it again... He didn't say anything about DV being "acceptable".
