It is the second largest city in the Southeastern United States behind Jacksonville, FL and the seventh largest metro population.

And actually if Greenville's metropolitan area included as many counties as Charlottes does, it's population would be in the two millions. Since Greenville's metro population is already big and it only encompasses 4 counties, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Pickens.

First, look at the latest census, 1.7 is the old number prior to the new definitions. It sounds as if you are suggesting that Greenville is as large as Charlotte, interesting.

Everyone knows that Greenville isn't as large as your beloved Charlotte, so don't get all upset. The poster was probably unaware that 2012 numbers were released.

Who am I to question numbers? Maybe Greenville is larger than Charlotte and is the fastest growing part of SC, the wealthiest, smartest and the envy of everyone in the Carolinas. From reading this board, Greenville is the Carolina city which all others try to emulate. Guess I should have stayed because no other Carolina city has as many positive attributes as Greenville.

Honestly, I come into the COLUMBIA forum or Columbia threads to read about Columbia. I really don't care about Greenville OR Charlotte. If I want to read about either of those cities I'll go to their forums or threads.

Now you're being silly brother. No one ever said or even remotely believes that crazy statement. But your choice isn't the ultimate choice for everyone. What's good for you isn't good for everyone else. I love visiting Charlotte, I just choose not to live there because it doesn't fit me.

No Greenville city has 1/12th of the population of Charlotte but Greenville's CSA could be in the 3-4 millions in a decade or two because of its fast growth.
I see where you got your information from now, Wikipedia is not up to date.

Atlanta - 5,457,831 - Very Large
County - 977,773 - Large
City - 432,427 - Large
City Area - 132 Sq. Mi. - Large

Charlotte - 2,296,569 - Large
County - 969,031 - Large
City - 751,087 - Large
City Area - 298 Sq. Mi. - Very Large

Greenville - 842,853 - Large
County - 467,605 - Medium Large
City - 61,674 - Medium
City Area - 29 Sq. Mi. - Small

Charleston - 697,439 - Medium Large - So Charleston has not hit the 700,000 mark.
County - 365,162 - Medium
City - 122,689 - Medium Large
City Area - 128 Sq. Mi. - Large

Columbia - 784,745 - Large
County - 393,830 - Medium
City - 130,591 - Medium Large
City Area - 135 Sq. Mi. - Large

Look at your growth rates as well, Greenville has not grown nearly as fast as Charlotte (or Charleston/Columbia for that matter). Growth is picking up in the upstate but, still trails many Carolina metros. Charlotte is projected to be at 4m residents in 20 years. I don't see Greenville anywhere close to that number in 40 years, even the CSA.

No, Greenville's CSA grew by about 100,000 in one year. It's population is already almost 1.4 million and the Greenville area is growing faster than the Charleston and Columbia areas.

Don't take things so personal, the poster suggested that Charlotte and Greenville's CSAs are similar in size and even hinted that Greenville will catch Charlotte in 20 years. Could it happen? As I said, I look at the numbers and drivers. You simply can't ignore Charlotte in SC because the principal city is in NC. The area is getting larger in SC and most respected economic reviews of SC include reviews of Charlotte. I am not sure why folks say "leave it alone" on these boards, that is silly.
