Charleston had to overcome South Carolina’s devastation after the Civil War and build a new way of life after slavery. The devastation wasn’t easy to overcome.
Comparing the Greenville MSA’s GDP to the Charleston MSA’s GDP given the gap in the two MSA’s populations is interesting. They are only four MSA’s apart despite their difference in population, Greenville at 52.5 billion to Charleston’s 50.4 billion as of 2021.
With Charleston’s urban area population holding a similar edge over Greenville and Mauldin’s urban area populations combined, I wonder how much greater Charleston’s urban area GDP is than Greenville and Mauldin’s urban areas’ GDP combined.
The upstate holds the largest GDP period. Lil ole Greenville(as some tend to believe) should be no where in the stratosphere. Yet here it sits.
Look. The point I'm trying to make is these stores have criteria they use. You may not use or like these stores, but that's irrelevant. They are full and some people love them. They stay packed. I'm using these as an example that most companies like these use MSA or CMSA not UA.
I will say, living in Columbia does bring an air of modesty. It just does its own thing. If we’re to anthropomorphasize (sp?) cities, Greenvillle is the red-headed step child that finally has been able to prove itself, Charleston is the has-been varsity QB that’s going through a resurgent midlife crisis and Columbia is just a normal Paul Rudd trying to order coffee.

That has to be the most inaccurate appraisal of Charleston I've ever read. Charleston is SC's Magic City, and has been since its founding. It also has very inviting suburbs (esp. for folks like me who don't like American suburbs). Greenville and Columbia are pleasant cities -- I always liked them -- but Charleston was, and still is, the state's claim to fame. And quite cool way beyond Meeting Street.

To each their own. It isn't for me. Too much antebellum reminder. Lol. Good tourist destination. Magic City? Okay. It's probably the only city over here you've really been in.

I say this because Charleston will not reach (at least in our lifetimes) the prestige it once had in Colonial America. Things have come together and Charleston has become a premier city but not what it once was- especially a city that’s on borrowed time. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts, though. My aunt lives there and when I fly back sometime this spring I’ll be sure to do some galavanting about the downtown area.
