Ignore the troll, red tide doesn't occur in the Winter.

Worse thing you might need is mosquito spray.

It's a cute little neighborhood, with a couple of open air beach bars within strolling distance. You should check it out on Google maps streetview.

For many years when our children were younger, we rented a condo in that exact area for family vacations. It always felt safe, and it wasn't unusual to see people walking on the sidewalk at night. We stopped going to Treasure Island/Sunset Beach only because we no longer needed a 2 BR condo after the kids grew up. Since we don't usually rent a car on FL trips we've not been there in a few years. I'd go back though.

Treasure Island and all other barrier islands in Pinellas have never been known for high crime / safety problems. It's pretty safe.

That doesn't impact the Bay Area.
