Oh, and let me also add this. If many of the Michiganders do decide on settling in West Texas cities, that definitely would help where the jobs are needed in what we've mentioned already. Abilene and Midland have some job needs and they need workers. Lubbock is experiencing its biggest growth spurt ever and additional annexation is currently being discussed. Reese Technology Center is adding new clientele seemingly just about every month. And additional new jobs will also be created in El Paso with the arrival of the new soldiers at Fort Bliss. That means more banks, hotels, restaurants, services, and new industry.

i remember the HUGE influx of peeps from michigan to houston in the late 70's-early 80's..... seemed at some points that i was seeing more cars with michigan plates than texas plates.... and that was when i first heard the joke about the last person leaving michigan turning off the lights.....

there was also a significant migration from the upstate new york area at that time......

Same thing happened in the early 80's in Houston (and probably the rest of Texas)...
Yep, I moved to Corpus Christi in 1982 and half the employees in the restaurant I worked in were from Michigan. Later I worked a framing crew on N. Padre and it was the same thing - half the tradesmen were northerners, some still living in campers on Mustang Island saving money. We had no immigrant workers on the job sites back then - I'm not sure why not.

But the difference was that Texas in early to mid 1980s was in full boom then. We're doing ok now but it's not the same labor shortage the the northerners filled back then.

Steve

they wont make it here. We are a non-union state, one is required to earn their paycheck here, not go hide and sleep their shift away with no repercussions because they have 20+ years seniority...

Austin, too. There is plenty of tech in Michigan.

I know for a fact that many of the plants on the Gulf Coast (Victoria area) can't find enough workers right now. My brother in law, who is a lawyer, was seriously considering quitting his law firm and joining one of the plants. There were STARTING out of high school workers at $22 an hour because they can't find enough.

There was an article in the Austin paper this weekend about Houston and how they really need workers. Snatching them right out of high school when they can right now.
