I always used to feel at home in London, like I belonged there. No longer travel since I sold the travel agency that once allowed me to travel (Just as well... I recall the good airlines as they once were, not the cattle cars they have become!!!
The British Isles, I hitchhiked through them during the 80's and loved it!
Recently, Germany Trier in particular, ud=sed to the the capital of Roman Gaul and had some amazing sites! Plus I like the Germans...very nononsense and professional.
England by far (if it is considered Europe), then Norway. We went up to Bode, Norway by Eurail and was an amazing adventure, beautiful fjords, huge glaciers, yellow tulips in abundance. Stayed at the B&B in Bode and went to the Arctic Ocean, great memories! Hated Germany and France, but was young and foolish and probably didn't know the right places to visit. However, did enjoy southern France, Aux en Provence and Cassis (sp?) and the beaches.
Austria! From top to bottom, the most beautifull country I have ever seen. Vienna is such an elegant city. The baroque Abby in the tiny town of Melk, the lakes, and the storybook Alpine villages were amazing. We hiked through Alpine meadows and glaciers, tiny villages and big cities. So much pride taken in even the tiniest of homes, what a place.
When I first visited Paris, I knew I had been there before in some other life.
The streets, people looked familiar to me in some strange way. I know my great grandparents had come from France, so maybe there was some deja-vu about the streets, buildings, etc. Very strange!
When I travel outside the U.S., I don't wear my American citizenship on my sleeve. I could sense the French don't like that feature about us or our aggressiveness in general. I also know that without the French, the U.S. would never been. But my favorite European country is Italy. As a romantic, I
think Rome has so much ambiance, history and "take it easy" type way of life.
I threw coins in the Trevi fountain, so one day I hope I can return. I think Rome will always be the center of the universe in the civilized world.
