It is open. I like it, too. Actually, the few photos I posted on the Tucson/Phoenix weather/heat or something thread were taken in Vail.

So I'm guessing it's pretty quiet out in Vail too? What about near the train tracks? Are there homes close to them? Are the trains loud?

He-he, let me put it this way - I live about 5 or 6 miles away from that railroad, my windows are very good, and when they're closed I still occasionally can hear a horn! That same railroad runs about a mile or two South of Rita Ranch and then it goes through Vail.

Yeah, that same line runs about 2 miles north of our lot in J-6 (I think). I've not been out there when the whistle has blown but I'm sure we'll hear it too.

Actually, that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as it's a long way off, just an occasional event and there's not OTHER noise around you. The sound of a distant train whistle - especially at night - is kind of a cool nostaligc sound (especially when it's pretty silent otherwise).

Figure if we can sleep through jets flying over head then a train whistle really isn't so bad.

Totally agreed! You beat me to this one, Lord Ken of Balfor! I was thinking along these same lines this morning. The sound of a train (whistle, tracks, etc) always takes me back to a different time...

BTW, are you guys aware that when an engineer blows the horn at a crossing of some sort - its always FOUR times?

Two Long... one short... and one long!

In MORSE CODE _ _ . _ that would be a Q!

I didn't know about the whistle pattern. That's pretty cool. I'll pay attention from now on. Starting to get pretty excited about the prospect of moving down there very soon (mostly dependent upon how soon we can sell our home here in Seattle).

When I worked at D-M I lived in Vail (Rancho Del Lago). The homes are new and nice. We had a great view (not all the homes do, but a lot have nice views). We did have a little bit of a critter problem, but the bug man seemed to help that. We liked it, it's a good area. Shopping is a little far. You've got Walgreens and...that's about it. The nearest Walmart (in Benson) is a 20-25 minute drive down the freeway.
It took me 25-30 minutes to commute to the base, depending on which gates were open. There a several routes you can take, and they're all about the same. You'll have to try them out and see which you like best.
Good luck!

Oh, and the train tracks, which are busy, can be loud if you live near them. If you're north of the wash it isn't too bad.

Oh, yeah! Once I looked at a house in the Southern end of Rita Ranch (probably even less than 2 miles from the tracks), heard the horn, and made a U-turn! I can't deal with such nuisance myself.
