I wish, but probably not. A virus is gonna do what it is gonna do.

The original SARS did mutate to a strain that spread less easily. That helped contain it, and it disappeared.

In the spirit of "Follow the Money" I post this which I found on another website. Can anyone confirm or deny this is true please? To me, it sounds like it may not be true.

hospitals get money for every COVID-19 patient, and not only that... get this... the hospital gets TRIPLE THE MONEY when someone is put on a ventilator, so they literally have huge financial incentive

Well, yes. The patient has health insurance which is billed for the amount the hospital charges, and the insurance company has a negotiated rate they pay the hospital.

It’s my understanding that ventilated people are in ICU. ICU generally has higher staffing and more heavily attended patients, they are looking in on the patient far more frequently. They pay strict attention to each one. When my husband was in ICU it was literally one on one attention.

That is more expensive than regular hospital care. Whether it is triple or not I can’t tell you. Once again it’s the hospital bills out what they bill out and the insurance company pays the negotiated rate. I believe whether or not be patient is held responsible for the rest of the bill is dependent on the state they’re in and their laws, and whether or not the deductible has been met.

So technically they are correct, but that’s how our healthcare works. But they aren’t willy-nilly putting people who shouldn’t be on ventilators on ventilators. Being on a ventilator is very very bad. They don’t do it unless they absolutely have to. It’s very damaging to the lungs, it is a last ditch effort to save someone’s life.

No, people are not being put on ventilators to make money for doctors and hospitals.

As Tallysmom says, it is more work.

In the spirit of openness and candor please identify the source of this "information."

So it seems like we are starting to contract both the number of cases and deaths. Yesterday the numbers were lower, but what is significant about that was the it was a weekday... where I have noticed the numbers are fully reported.

Why by any stretch of the imagination wouldn't a hospital get more money for doing more work?

They're not going to put people on ventilators willy-nilly, just so they can bill higher, when there's a shortage of ventilators.

This is conspiracy theory thinking at its best.

At any other time, people would think it reasonable that hospitals charge a low rate for one level of care, and only charge the higher rate for a more complex, labor intensive and equipment intensive level of care.

Suddenly, it is simply a conspiracy to make more money, rather than save on costs.
