Even as a non-religious person, the words of Luke 23:34 seem particularly apt tonight.

"Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots."

I will just leave this here. While the vote to leave the EU was largely driven by older people without much stake in the future of the UK, this was mostly the notorious "boomer" generation born in the couple of decades after WWII.

Those most senior members of our society though who actually fought in that war can often have a different perspective, they see the role that the EU has played in bringing European countries together, cementing peace and building cross-border relationships and mutual friendships between people, something their children's generation maybe took for granted.

So the same group who when younger, voted to join the economic community which would become the EU, now has spearheaded to leave it. You are fine with the vote over 40 years ago that happened and make no absurd comments about it, yet are not fine with such a vote and even go on to insult them.

Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, are just fine not being in the EU. Canada, the US, China, etc, are just fine not being in the EU.

Seems they were much more concerned about the UK now and in the future as they showed up to vote, versus those who could not even be bothered to do so.

The boomer generation has operated a hypocritical scorched earth policy throughout its existence.

Benefit from membership of the EU during their working lives and vote for it then. Vote against it and deny those benefits to future generations once they are retired.

Benefit from vastly better pensions than their parents, then vote in parties wanting to slash future pensions once they are secure.

Benefit from expansion of higher education and free tuition when they were young, then vote for parties whose policy it is to indebt students up to the eyeballs in the next generation because they don't want to pay the years like their parents generation did.

Push policies that screw up the environment throughout their lives, taking the short term material benefits, then push back against the next generation trying to sort out the damage because they don't want to give up any comforts and won't be around to experience the worst effects anyway.

Benefit from rapid expansion of home ownership through large scale home building, then as soon as they are in situ try to block as much new housing as possible in their area so that there is a housing shortage and affordability crisis for the next generations.

Etc etc. History may well judge the boomers as the most selfish and entitled generation in history.

He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

How many times did Dave tell you that he never voted yes to Europe? How many times did he say that unrestricted immigration had resulted in sky high housing prices?

When was the 1st Earth Day, and who the heck do you think took part in it?

No matter whether is was the US, Canada, UK, Europe, or anywhere with cold winters, in the 1950s and 60s, winter meant watching sooty, black clouds of smoke from coal fires billowing out of industrial and residential smokestacks. City skylines would be black, gray, yellow, etc. from the pollution. Rivers and lakes were disgusting cesspools. Lake Erie once caught on fire. That was not the only sizable body of water that burned. A lot of people who were born in the baby booms after WWII worked on cleaning up the mess that was left to us. A lot of Boomers in many countries paid a price in job losses. Ever wonder what happened to all of the coal miners after Thatcher was done with them? I bet not. You proved what you thought of fishermen.

You're welcome to your opinions, but that should not include blaming an entire generation for things that were not their doing.

Very apt that it was Brexit day when the UK saw its first infections with the new virus that is spreading around the world. A perfect metaphor for the nativist nationalism that has caused Brexit I would say.
