Chester isn't as pastoral as you might like (there is some rolling terrain as well as lush green fields) but in town (the main st lined by Victorians and such) there's Baba Louis bakery on one end of town, and the Heritage on the other end. Also, TARPS, an animal rescue group, is on the road into town, near the horse farm. TARPS (The Animal Rescue and Protection Society, Inc. Humane Society)

Chester is the sort of place which has a Scottish pub, a lovely inn with a restaurant and tavern, diners, antique shops, inns, small grocery, new and used book stores, am historical society, town rec center, BBQ joint, many churches, and is a small town at the same time. There are community events -- the winter festival just passed, and many other activities though out the year.

BTW -- I love Chester!

I know this, but I still pay only $450 in VT annually compared to nearly $2700 in the town I lived in along 128 in Massachusetts! My brother still pays that much in Massachusetts.

I should also mention how much I liked the little specialty grocers (Henry's Market, Spice and Nice), the new bakery downtown, and the surprisingly good selection at Price Chopper and Hannaford in Bennington. Ah, if only there were jobs there.

Thumbs up Brattleboro...The coolest town in vermont

There’s a case to be made for Brattleboro as the coolest place in Vermont. The Connecticut River town 150 miles southeast of the Queen City has many of the same amenities: numerous galleries and an art museum; an Art Deco performing arts theater; a brew-pub; several bars with live music; a boho CD store; and a busy food co-op.

Ive lived here in Brattleboro for 7 years now and it IS the best place in Vermont.
