Another interesting fact is the record high extent of ice in the Bering Sea, no doubt caused by the extremely cold weather that has parked itself in Alaska since November. I found a blog post with NORSEX data here (yes, I know it's a "skeptic" blog but it is real data). The NSDIC has an interesting article on their website. Robert Felix of IceAgeNow.com has a post detailing his point of view on it, which should be obvious given the site's name but it's quite interesting, if for no other reason than to keep close track of cold and snow.
This might be the best visualization of winter sea ice:

Still below average, but not way off the norm as some previous years have been.

Surprised Northern California is getting a hard freeze, but it kinda makes sense. The difference between mid winter and April in the northern California coast is small with respect to temperatures; the bigger seasonal change is from precipitation.

Still no leaves here except for the trees whose flowers have already gone, but that should change soon. Most trees already have pretty visible and large buds, and foliage should be seen in a week or two.

Haha. LOL.. I was going to post Montana snowstorm in the "Winter Out West" thread (maybe I did) but I was lazy today.

You also reminded me to check out the tic tac toe cold chart. :-)

56 F today with a chilly breeze. It's been very dry and windy lately. Here's a few pics I took this afternoon. Sorry for the low quality. I really should get my hands on a camera.

I haven't managed to take any pictures myself, but here's a few pictures on Flickr taken near in my area recently, it's actually nice to see everything coming to life again, in 2010 some leaves were left bare until May

I had thought places in both sets of pics, would be looking a bit more springlike after the warm weather lately. Deciduous trees give an area such a different look.

I'll try and take some pictures in the immediate area, because the big tree in my garden is completely green, and so are many trees.. like ilmc19, I need to get a proper good camera rather then a camera phone.

It looks like a forest fire has broken out in the area. This picture was taken from facebook. It's hard to tell, but that's the mountain in the distance and it looks like a fairly significant fire.

A wildfire broke out here too, it's been really dry recently it's no surprise.

As you can see in this picture the ground is pretty dry and cracked
