Eastern and Central Europe were quite cold in January 2006. Warsaw for example averaged -11.3/-5.6°C, with 7 lows below -20°C and 5 highs below -15°C.

An intense cold front swept Eastern Europe just before the 20th. Moscow went from a low of -2°C to a high of -27°C in 2 days!

How was Europe in 2005-06? Curious. Finland probably good measure for it? Maybe Jan Feb especially

Anyway 2005-2006 was rather cold where I was in France, but it was more like durable dry cold with no real intense event, aside from a couple of semi heavy snow events, one in late december and the other one a bit later (late january ?). It was quite similar to 2002/2003, and 2008/2009. Good winters with several lows in the -10/-15c range not too far from home. I think Grenoble (St Geoirs at 400 m asl, not city) reached -20c once in January 2006, not too bad considering their average should be like 2c in January.

The spring and summer that followed were really quite above average (aside from August). July 2006 was probably the warmest summer on record in Lyon, with a 26c monthly average I believe. That was a pretty continental year overall, I enjoyed it a lot.

2004/2005 and mostly 2009/2010 remain my reference points for winter since pretty much the early 1990s. Before that there were the crazy 80s but I was little and I don't know if being a child does not make things more intense in my memory than they actually were.

Ah yes I fondly remember the summer of 2006. Monthly average was exactly 26C (~5C above average) here in July but then came August and the average high went down the drain to a mere 21C (5C below average). That was a quite a shock I never wore my scarves so early. :P

July 2006 and August 2003 were mostly the same here temperature-wise. 06 had warmer lows, though 03 had warmer highs. 2003 was the better summer overall with 3 months >= 23C on average.

First substantial snowfall in northern germany. Average for the first falling snow would be around Early December.

Pics were taken in Hanover, credits go to Alexander Körner.

January was normal, but February colder than normal. March was one of the coldest on record.

Thanks! interesting! I had a feeling March would of been interesting there because of the lag time with the Vortex.

Nice to have learned that if you know where the Vortex is in the Fall, you can pretty much forecast cold for weeks and months to follow if it has weakened and split off from the Arctic regions.

While the current PV has split in 2, You guys have the colder side, thanks a lot. lol

Why does this thread remind me of, "Fun With Flags" on The Big Bang Theory?
