Chile has a similar feature. A Mediterranean climate shouldn't feature rain most winter days, it should get some high pressure.
European Mediterranean climates at similar latitudes to NZ see little difference winter in high pressure or rain days.

Csb climates such as Seattle or Northern Spain typically have more rain days or are cloudier than NZ during winter.

I can't see any evidence that Csb climates are fundamentally different to Cfb climates during winter.

I'm comparing within Europe, not New Zealand, there's a sharp contrast between sunnier, more variable precipitation Mediterranean climates and the oceanic ones even at the same latitude. I'm not using exact Koppen definition, I'm considering those Csb oceanic due to wet winters and different air mass patterns. As for high pressure, how are you defining it? As I pointed out, you can't go by overhead pressure.

If you're going by exact Koppen definition, no. But typically, airmass flow is different in the wintertime.

Borderline subtropical/mediterranean climates in Europe like on the Adriatic coast are among the rainiest in Europe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podgorica#Climate

1660 mm a year! Compare to Paris 650 mm, Helsinki 680 mm, Berlin 570 mm... Even Naples gets 1000 mm annually.

No reason, just sayin'.
