When it gets that messy, it's better for the old snowpack to melt completely rather than remain a slushy, icy mess. Though a large new snowfall will bury the old snow.

Storm was heading into Pittsburgh with South winds but that storm is weakening now and a new one is taking over East of I-81 in Virginia which means Pittsburgh winds shifted from the North and BAM changed to snow. They are going to thump away now for a couple of inches.
When you see an S like that on the Satellite/Infrared that's an indication the storm is strengthening. Typically the storm is right above the bottom curve. That's where the storm is taking place. interesting!
