We've seen several times over the past few years where December is mild, but then the pandora's box splits open sometime in January. In 2014 it happened the first week of January. In 2015 it happened the second week. As a cold hater I'm loving this winter so far, but there is still a lot of time for things to go horribly wrong
GFS has it going closer to the coast, with the low just off Long Island. only a few flakes briefly as the storm exits in southern Vermont & New Hampshire; otherwise all rain. Northern Vermont and New Hampshire are cold enough for snow for most of the storm but too far away from the low. This is why northern Vermont & New Hampshire gets less big snow storms [even if totals are high] since the big storms go along the coast
Anytime i have a cold and wet Dec i pay a high and dry price in Jan and Feb with hot weather. More heat today and a thin sorry line of rain that will weaken even more as it moves south in the gulf. If i get over .30" i will be shocked. Back to more cooler weather next week but still above normal.
Very cold morning in Newfoundland with the interior and the northern coast being colder than -20°C, that is a strong divide with the remainder of Maritime Canada.
You could call it "latitudal inversion" or something, since Southern Scandinavia at 1 pm today is equal in temps compared to, and sometimes milder than the Adriatic Sea coast in many areas.
The temperature in Bari, Southern Italy's second largest mainland city, is about 1°C according to Ventusky, and that's for a 12°C January average high. Much of Croatia's coastline is also stuck at around 3°C too. The dominance of the cold air on the seashore is still nothing compared to the -7°C current temperature of Sarajevo.
At the same time, the cold Balkan air has made for a rather funny pattern over the Black Sea. 17°C coastal temperatures in Batumi in Georgia, while coastal Bulgaria is right around the freezing point!
Wasn’t as sunny as expected, but still there was some sunshine this morning.
