In 2015 we did. January 2016 was another story entirely, at least up to Hartford.

On the cusp of historic cold in the PNW but just how cold will it get? Operational runs have consistently been at the extreme low end of the ensemble spread. For example, check out the latest GFS forecast for Everett Paine Field, the home of Boeing. The record low there is 0°F (-18°C) and the model is calling for a low of -15°F (-26°C)!!!

Has the GFS gone made again? People called it crazy in June when it predicted 108°F in Seattle... and then it happened.

You can see the really cold air not really digging to the Southeast much. Mostly staying in Canada but there have been more cold dips in the west actually. Dec 10th, 14th, 16th and the incoming one now.

Purples are -15C
There is a hint from the latest Euro and its ensembles that the PNW cold will be a little more progressive and start to sweep east to involve the upper midwest by day 10. GFS and the Canadian model keep the cold out west.

Good the cold needs to move east. The number of crazy above average temperatures of 20-35F is really adding up

-PNA STILL predicted 2-3 weeks out, this has consistently destroyed any cold air making inroads further east. I’m going with the GFS until further notice.

Yeah, I think that's a good call.

OK, we are officially in Wonderland: 2-4 inches of snow for San Francisco?

Won't happen--but the fact that this is even in the conversation only 7 days out is sheer madness and shows just how cold the air is.

Higher elevations of Santa Cruz County and Monterey County have snow possibilities with very cold air aloft that will be mixing down.

2 current Maps.

Winds off the coast.

10,000 foot temps right now. My software doesn't extend out far enough but check out where the freezing line is. Over Los Angeles, nothing extreme. -11C is the record. Tomorrow afternoon it should be -8C.

BUT check this out………

Check out the 5000' temps. No where near below freezing yet. Hence the rain at the surface. This level needs to be below freezing to get snow at the surface except for elevations above 3000' obviously

Sad to see the green color in Montana. Ouch. 50F in Billings right now
