-45c in edmonton arpt this morning. Env can has a -50c forecast for tmrw morning, though they are a bit overly dramatic while forecasting during cold snaps in my experience.
Yes, it's unlikely. But see the arctic outbreak thread for why -50°C could indeed happen somewhere in Central Alberta. I give it a 10% chance.

Among Bastardi's positions that are at odds with the science: he has asserted that the world was warmer in the 1930s than today, that the human contribution of carbon dioxide is too small to have any effect, and that warming is caused by sunspots and exchange with warmer oceans.[14] He argues in his columns that extreme weather events occur naturally and that there is not enough evidence to state that such events are unusual.[15] In 2011, Bastardi wrote that, as he had predicted three years earlier, global average temperature was falling, and by 2030 would return to levels seen in the late 1970s due to the "triple-crown of cooling" comprising oceanic temperature cycles, solar radiation cycles, and volcanic activity.[16]
Of course its now looking like the rain snow line will cross into Chicago and for an unknown amount of time the snow will switch over to rain cutting down the totals. WTF
The switch back will probably occur late afternoon and evening.
36 F high there, looks like OHare switched to rain around 11 AM Central time and won't change back to snow until evening time. Even that model underestimated the warm intrusion.
It was this morning then the low moved farther north and the snow switched to rain
