Algonquin Park Oct 4. Colours a bit past peak.

Still a great time to be there, September was dry so there was very little mud on the trail. I even went swimming a couple times - the water was fairly cold, but it was hot enough that I decided I wanted the refreshment, I'd guess the water was around 63-66F. Went on some very pleasant canoe and kayak rides too.

Temperatures while I was there
Oct 3: 82F/48F
Oct 4: 82F/49F
Oct 5: 73F/56F
Oct 6: 68F/44F

Normal would be around 58F/38F for first week of October. We got some rain overnight on Oct 5/6, but no rain while we were outside. Oct 3-4 were very sunny, Oct 5 was mostly cloudy but not entirely so, and Oct 6 was sunny again.

Stopped at Devil's Glen on the way home (Oct 6) along the Niagara Escarpment. Colours just beginning to peak there.

Still had a bit of passion flowers blooming yesterday. Not sure if we'll get any more opening with the cold and overcast weather.

Bad fires out Howard Springs ( right on my son's back fenceline )
Temps above 40c, low humidity and dew points, 5 and half months of no rain after a 2,400mm wet season sadly had the riparian native rainforest of Dutchy's Lagoon primed to burn.... and burn it did !
Water bombers and helicopters in action all afternoon and dozens of properties under threat.
Was a tough afternoon....

My son's place about here...

Before and after...

Nice pics.

It's always confused me how Canadians and Americans think pawpaw means Asimina triloba when in fact pawpaw really means Carica papaya.

More photos from far SW Ontario (Lambton and Kent County)

Sunrise over the Wallaceburg area polders and marshes.

Lots of wet gloomy weather but the sandhill cranes didn't seem to mind. This is just a small part of a flock of about 100 birds on a farm field.

Swamp near Sydenham River.

Sydenham River

Thames River

Lion's Mane mushrooms

Some areas seeing colour change, others still not so much.

13 years of foliage comparisons from my roof around October 20th.

This years colors not great but the change seems about average

2013 was the earliest (tree in back is bare already)

2018 was the latest (lots of green still)

2014 & 2015 had the Best Colors

Colorado Spruce Tree got hit by lightning

Photos of Petrolia, ON from last week - some pretty nice Halloween decor.

These are the left and right side of the yard from the same house. The zombie horse and pig, skeleton chariot, werewolf, skeleton carousel... some pretty nice décor

First frost. Was a pretty solid one, 28F at 8am. The local weather station shows a low of 28F on the hourly readings as well, but once the more precise readings are released tomorrow, maybe we'll see a value as low as 27F.

Container garden hiding in the garage - it's unheated but insulated and attached to the house, so it seems to have been in the high 40s-high 50s depending which part of the garage. Next week looks like high 50s-60s days and 40s-50s nights so they should be able to enjoy one more week of mild weather.

45 min later (8:45am) and the sun is already generating quite a lot of steam off the roofs.
