Summers: Low-moderate humidity with rainfall in the form of thunderstorms.

My admittedly ridiculous ideal (semi-arid) climate:

Jan: -17°C/-34°C, 0.4 cm snow
Feb: -11°C/-26°C, 1.5 cm snow
Mar: 0°C/-15°C, 0.3 mm rain, 4 cm snow
Apr: 13°C/-3°C, 24 mm rain, 5 cm snow
May: 19°C/8°C, 75 mm rain, 2 cm snow
Jun: 29°C/5°C, 21 mm rain
July: 36°C/9°C, 12 mm rain
Aug: 37°C/7°C, 1 mm rain
Sep: 23°C/2°C, 14 mm rain, 1 cm snow
Oct: 14°C/-6°C, 7 mm rain, 2 cm snow
Nov: -5°C/-18°C, 0.1 mm rain, 3.5 cm snow
Dec: -15°C/-28°C, 2.3 cm snow

or for you silly Americans

Jan: 2°F/-29°F, 0.2 inches snow
Feb: 12°F/-15°F, 0.6 inches snow
Mar: 33°F/5°F, 0.01 inches rain, 1.5 inches snow
Apr: 56°F/26°F, 1.1 inches rain, 1.7 inches snow
May: 67°F/46°F, 3 inches rain, 1.1 inches snow
Jun: 85°F/40°F, 0.8 inches rain
July: 97°F/48°F, 0.5 inches rain
Aug: 99°F/44°F, 0.02 inches rain
Sep: 74°F/36°F, 0.6 inches rain, 0.6 inches snow
Oct: 57°F/22°F, 0.3 inches rain, 0.3 inches snow
Nov: 24°F/-1°F, 1.4 inches snow
Dec: 6°F/-19°F, 0.9 inches snow

Living in Alberta plus being a climate nerd will do things to you. I like extreme temperatures and abundant sunshine, but hate having much precipitation. I know the temperature ranges are ridiculous, but I can dream.

Winter (November - March): Extremely cold, but very sunny and with very little snow
Spring (April - May): Rapid rise in temperatures accompanied by most of the annual precipitation; mostly rain, but definitely some snow. Moderate humidity, but sunshine amount are still high.
Summer (June - August): Extremely hot, dry, and sunny, but with very low humidity and a huge temperature drop after sunset.
Autumn (September - October): Rapid drop in temperatures, but generally warm during the day and cool to cold at night. Very low precipitation, mostly rain. Very sunny.

Coltingbury, New Floridania Weather Forecast
Valid 29th December 2010 - 3rd January 2011

Weather Warnings:
Ice warnings are being issued for 2nd-3rd Jan due to much colder than average conditions, and a high risk of snow and freezing rain.

29th December 2010
Mostly clear, with few clouds building PM. Light N winds.
Low -2°C / 28°F high 12°C / 54°F

30th December 2010
Clear AM and becoming mostly cloud later with some light rain.
Low 0°C / 32°C high 12°C / 54°F

31st December 2010
Mostly cloudy with light rain and moderate NW winds.
Low 4°C / 39°F high 11°C / 52°F

1st January 2011
Overcast with heavy showers and a blustery W wind as a strong cold front moves into the area.
Low 6°C / 43°F high 10°C / 50°F

2nd January 2011
Fairly clear at first, then becoming overcast. Staying cold. Very windy with NW winds to 25-30mph.
Low -1°C / 30°F high 7°C / 45°F

3rd January 2011
Clear spells at night, allowing for a hard frost. Moderate showers rapidly developing by day, with a mix of sleet and rain, or possibly snow in heavier showers. Gusts may reach 40-50mph in heavy showers.
Low -4°C / 25°F high 2°C / 36°F

There isn't much doubt that this is a very unpleasant start to 2011, however the entire seasonal forecast for winter, taking into account all sorts of factors including the strong La Nina, indicates somewhat colder conditions throughout the period.

New Year's Day stats show the coldest temperature recorded on the day in Coltingbury as being -11.6°C / 11.1°F in 1987. The max temperature on that day only reached -4°C / 25°F, and it was the coldest day in Coltingbury's climatic history.

The warmest New Year's Day was in 2005, when it reached 21.5°C / 70.7°F under 9 hours of sunshine; the low that day was a mild 12.7°C / 54.9°F.

No such luck this year, and looking at past records if the temp predictions for 3rd Jan come off, it will be a daily low temperature record.

Any chances of a significant winter storm developing on or after the 3rd? Or will it mostly remain cool and showery?

TBH it's looking like a few cool but dry days, before becoming a bit milder again. These arctic low pressure systems run out of steam on getting this far south (which is unusual) and milder air tends to win over. The most of any precipitation will be around 4th-5th but should be quite light and unlikely to be much more than sleet. It will melt fast as temperature will be back to seasonal average (and above) a few days later.

The worst "arctic storm" event here was in January 1974, and resulted in a severe hail/thunder-squall followed by a major freezing rain event. The temp hit a record low of -13.7°C on 7th but was already up to 20°C on 13th.

Very interesting. This storm and the record cold all happend in 1974? What was the high temperature on the 7th? What were the ice accumulations in that storm?

What's the highest snowfall recorded in Coltingbury history? I would presume snow is very fleeting event most winters.

The 1974 event started with a powerful cold front on 5th-6th, whereby a strong squall line with thunder/hail formed further south. It started with heavy rain then turned to snow on the back edge. 2 inches of rain fell in about half an hour and rapidly froze as temperatures plummeted. So most of the precip in that event was in the glazed frozen rain form. Snowfall from the event was 20mm as liquid so x10 was about 20cm or so (8 inches). The max temperature on 7th Jan 1974 was 2.5°C.

The 8 inches on 6th would have been the highest lying snow at any time in its weather history. As you say, snow is usually very fleeting and often melts on hitting the ground.

Looking back through the the records though (mostly the recent ones) quite of lot of the snow events were associated with deep convection at strong cold fronts (thundersnow) and recent examples include November 27th 2005, February 21st 2006, February 7th-8th and December 24th 2008.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7PM Thursday

So far a foot of snow has fallen with another 6-12 inches expected tomorrow. Moderate to heavy snow will continue through tomorrow, ending by 7PM. Total storm accumulations may approach two feet with higher drifts. Windy conditions Friday will cause the freshly fallen snow to blow around and may cause icy conditions on roadways. Travel is highly discourage New Year's Eve. If you must make a trek to the liquor store, use extra caution.

Coltingbury Weather Highlights of 2010

2010 was a year of volatile weather in Coltingbury, unfortunately with some weather related deaths thrown in.

Some of the major events, in chronological order:

January 21st-23rd
After unusually mild temperatures, in some parts reaching 24°C / 75°F, a severe thunderstorm outbreak occurred, with the worst storms battering the city on 22nd, causing £95,000,000 damage in the city from hail and also a small tornado north of the city. At least 25 people were injured. Torrential rain on 23d also caused flash flooding and damage.

March 14th-15th
Temperature reached 33°C in the city, this is the earliest date 90°F (32.2°C) has been exceeded.

July 6th-10th
A heatwave: temperatures reach 45°C / 113°F in the city, temp drops to just 33°C / 92°F on morning of 9th. Several successive days above 40°C make conditions difficult to cope with in high humidity. Frequent thunderstorms plague the area in the evenings/nights with several lightning fires being started.

November 9th
A strong anabatic cold front generates a severe squall line as it encounters very mild air 27°C / 81°F over the midlands; this storm goes on to produce several tornadoes, including an F3 which claims 2 lives in Coltinbury and causes severe damage. Hail damage also occurs in the city with costs over £450,000,000.

December 1st
A rare snow heavy but brief shower drops 2.5cm of snow in the city in the early morning hours. It had already melted by dawn (aah, what a shame).
