If you go to Perffffffffffffffffffff you'll find out that 90% of winter days are "not too bad for winter". And some Perfs reckon that teh 180mm of rainz they recieve makes them cold windy and cloudy. Cough*bullcrap*cough

Have you ever lived there?
The average 18 degree day might seem mild by Melbourne standards, but it does feel cold over there due to the wind chill and lack of sun.
The first half of spring is also consistently cool (verging on cold) and rainy.
Coming from Sydney originally, I did find the period from July to early October quite miserable.
It is certainly NOT like Brisbane, which truly lacks a winter.

Dry south westerlies have come early this year - indicative of more dry weather to come.
I was down in Sydney (Rosebery near the airport) for 2 days this week for a course, it is definitely colder and more miserable than up here.

LOL then what does 12C with windchill and lack of sun in Melbourne feel like? Those poor dears must be suffering with their 18-19C average winter temps and 6+ hours of daily sun.

And Melbourne is not? Our first half of spring is atleast 3-4C cooler and certainly cloudier. If you think July to early Oct in Perff is miserable, then geez mate, you obviously haven't seen a Melbourne July to October.

And Pertf is certainly closer to Brisbane than Melbourne in terms of winter temp and sunshine.

What is the difference between Sydney and Newcastle weather. Since there's only 150km difference, I didn't think it would be much warmer/sunnier up there.

I think hundreds of millions of people would find your version of "miserable" to be hyper-fussy.

I looked over stats at BOM, and the average temps are about the same for Sydney vs. Perth from July-Oct...
The only difference I see is Perth has slightly less sun per month and twice the number of rainy days per month.

....AND far more sun than Sydney over the majority of the year.

This Summer I've come to fully appreciate another horrible thing about hot weather here. My brother has asthma, and ever since it's gotten hot and humid here, he's been struggling almost constantly. He's been to several specialists, gone through extensive tests, and nothing helps completely or even halfway decently. Inhalers help for a few minutes, and that's all. He can no longer do his job despite all his treatments and medication, and soon I may have to be fully supporting both of us. We may have to move just so he can work again. But we can't afford to move! And meanwhile, even my breathing has been more labored than usual in the last few weeks. The heat is really affecting me even more than usual this year. I can't stay hydrated at work no matter how much water I drink, because I sweat so much. Summer for us has gone from just being really annoying to being truly, utterly miserable, possibly even dangerous. In the winter the worst thing we have to worry about is dry skin.
