Ok, you could go to Lidl and the city market and buy directly from the producers, but they aren't that cheap and who would have the energy to do that 4 times a week?
Spar is not cheap

And I though the UK was bad - the four biggest supermarkets own 76% of the market.

As far as I'm aware, there are 23 supermarket chains operating in the UK. My favourite one is Waitrose, where all the food snobs shop.

Also speaking a regional supermarket, one common in the American West but not here is Safeway. I visited the UK often in the 90s but not the US West. Safeway opened some British stores, I assumed Safeway was a British chain. The biggest supermarket Chain in New England, Super Stop and Shop, is owned by the Dutch chain Ahold.

Yes we had Safeway here but it was taken over by Asda (there is one in Winnipeg too). In the nearest biggest town there is:

1. Asda.
2. M & S.
3. Tesco.
4. Lidl.
5. Sainsbury's.
6. Costcutter.
7. Mace.
8. Spar.

And like alot of other shops.

as for prices... i was surprised to find that shower gels, deodorants, soap, washing liquids, perfumes etc are like half price here in comparison to Poland! I pay £1 for Radox shower gel... i saw TV advert on Polish TV last week that it's now on "sale" for just 12.99pln (£2.30) same goes for many other products...
The worst thing in UK is meat, its so damn expensive, and organic products are also overpriced
