My wife and I live in Raleigh, NC and I am considering a job opportunity in Boca. We are 42 years old and our children are pre-school age. We moved from LI, NY in Aug 2009 and are still adjusting.
What would be a good place to raise my family, I see Wellington mentioned here quite often. Are there any "neighborhoods" not subdivisions, that are walkable and safe? Our income will be around 150-200k a year.

Thanks for any replys!

we have a house in "olympia" which is a large development in wellington. we bought it 4 years ago at the height and i'm actually moving from nj next week. we had been using it as a 2nd home.

if i had it to do all over again.....not sure i'd buy in olympia.....they still have a few hundred homes unbuilt/unsold. it is a lovely place with a beautiful resort style pool area etc but all those unsold homes......

if i were to consider wellington....i would buy into an older more established development (just my opinion). i know from doing my own research that the schools in wellington are great (compared to other areas of florida).

but if i were to really start from scratch (as you are).......i might look a bit further north to palm beach gardens. it feels more like ny/nj to me. actually i really love weston or coral springs for that ny/nj feel but that might be too far south and west.

good luck

Weston will be too west. When we looked in Weston I did NOT get that NY feel at all which is why we loved Boca besides other reasons...However If your looking for great schools I wouldn't recommend Coral Springs...and I wouldnt' look past West Palm beach if your dh will be working in Boca..We are from brooklyn NY and lived in NJ for 10 years and Charlotte for 2 years..We live in Boca and Love it...the Schools are some of the best in Palm Beach County...I would recommend looking into Del Prado Elem School and Verde Elem here in Boca Good Luck to you where ever you decide...Wellington to Boca would be a fine commute as well..

What is your definition of walkable?

Walkable to me is having actual sidewalks and if you could walk to amenities that would be an even bigger bonus.

You're not going to find the level of education for your kids in S FL as you will in Raleigh. I'm sure you guys are aware of this already though. On that income, you guys can pretty much live anywhere which will give you the nicer areas with the better schools.

Right. Because the several nationally ranked schools in Palm Beach County aren't up to par with "Raleigh."

Raleigh Greatschools schools system rating: 7

Raleigh Schools - Raleigh North Carolina School Ratings - Public and Private

Palm Beach County Greatschools school system rating: 7

Palm Beach County Public Schools (PBCSD) in West Palm Beach, FL | GreatSchools

Boca Raton: 9

Boca Raton Schools - Boca Raton Florida School Ratings - Public and Private

Wellington: 9

Wellington Schools - Wellington Florida School Ratings - Public and Private

Jupiter: 9

Well, I wasnt talking about a specific school, I was saying in general, the schools in PBC dont rank up to those of Raleigh. Overall, Raleigh schools are very good, while PBC is hit or miss.

Relying on Greatschools ratings to distinguish between schools of 2 different states is not something I would recommend. These ratings are subjective and subject to interpretation.

Oh? So what measure is NOT subjective or subject to interpretation?

Heck, what measure of quality of life, good areas to live, etc. aren't subjective or subject to interpretation?

Comsense made a blanket statement that is demonstrably false by at least one measure. If anyone has contrary evidence, then let's see it. Otherwise, "subjectivity" is an underlying caveat to all rankings and school measures, especially between states.
