Wow Quilter Chick you sure are down on Chimney Rock and don't miss a chance to bash.
First of all the question was what is your favorite town in the mountains. Not your least favorite.
As a homeowner since '03 and full time resident since '07, Chimney Rock might not be for everyone but I have found my home and will be here for years to come. I LOVE living here and can't imagine living anywhere else. I wake up everyday and am thankful to live in such a beautiful place. We are a tight knit community with many long time residents. They are retiress, those who work in the local community and commuters to surrounding towns.
Come on over someday, I will be glad to give you a tour of some great shops and restaurants and introduce you to some really nice people. Hopefully you will see us other than a tourist trap.
Many Floridians seem to like Maggie Valley. Why they are drawn there, is beyond me. Unless you're into Waffle House, Huddle House, Wendy's, WalMart, and tacky gift shops. There is nothing there except pretty mountains. Murphy, Sylva, Clyde, Franklin .... ut uh.
Try Robbinsville, Lake Santeetlah. Waynesville. Lake Junaluska, Cullowhee around Western Carolina Univ. (one week would do it in those spots). Fontana Dam is awesome.
Boone! Blowing Rock! Weaverville! Linville! Black Mountain! Hendersonville! Brevard! Flat Rock! If you're that far (Maggie V.) over towards TN, then spend a day or two near Brasstown and visit the John C. Campbell Folk School (www.folkschool.org). After a month near or in Maggie Valley, you deserve to be bored to tears.
Chimney Rock and Cherokee: tourist traps.
True story.
Native Texan and I LOVE Maggie Valley, the atmosphere, the views, the lay of the land, the people, all great Can't wait to get back to Maggie in Oct!

I knowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I can only guess that the Floridians that are drawn there are just looking at the mountains and haven't looked at other places in WNC?
What about Lake Lure? I went to Chimney Rock when I was nine years old. Is Lake Lure (other than the lake) a separate town?
Our State magazine just profiled Lake Lure with some gorgeous photos of houses on the lake. They said the lake was originally conceived as a millionaires playground, but it never happened. Since there are so few lakes like Lake Lure in the area, I can't help but wonder why it hasn't been snapped up by super wealthy people.
Not as exclusive as Lake Toxaway for instance. I suppose it's sort of a good thing though.

Live 2 Miles outside of Maggie, There is NO Walmart, NO Wendy's, Never Noticed a Huddle House, but never looked either, Same for Waffle house.....Other then Subway, I haven't Noticed any Chain restaurant or Store
I haven't seen West Jeff yet but it is now on the to do list.
Yes, but it will ruin your "B" theme.
