I am considering trying to make the move into field of HR, and I was hoping for suggestions. I have a BA in psychology and have worked in banking for ~8 years, most recently in pseudo-administrative assistant roles. While I do not have any experience in HR, I am hoping that I will be able to get into an HR department as as assistant of some sort. I know that this will not be easy, but the position I am in now is pretty dead end, so I need to plan for the future.
Advice I have read elsewhere has suggested that a masters degree without any experience is not very useful. Plus, I would really rather not accumulate any more student loan debt at this time. That said, I would like to take some classes to hopefully become more marketable. Does anyone know if it is better to take classes at an actual college or through a professional organization like SHRM?
I live in the Chicagoland area, and I am willing to relocate within reason, but I cannot imagine moving completely across the country unless it is for a job with a big, well known company. I would even do an internship, but unfortunately, they tend to only be open to students in related programs. Would it be strange to offer to relocate for what will almost certainly be a sub-40k job?
Are you currently employed? Can you get a job in the HR dept. of your current company? If you do that, you should be eligible for jobs above $40k. Talk to your HR manager and let them know of your interest. Ask them to look at your resume and ask for suggestions on things you can do now to get the skills/experience you need.

Thank you for the suggestions, charlygal. I have kept an eye out for HR jobs at my current company, but the department here is fairly small and there has not been an advertised opening in years. That said, I have not tried to approach them. As for you other suggestion, something like that did occur to me, but I was afraid that it would be inappropriate to ask. I am glad to hear that someone thinks it would be okay to do. My boss is pretty awesome, so as long as I ran it by her first, I think that she would support me. I know that including the boss is not generally considered a good idea, but I think that my boss would be an exception.
Yeah, I wouldn't tell your boss about it. There's no need to do that. If you do, couch it in the most positive light as possible. Make it sound like you just want to expand your horizons by moving into HR. Don't say anything negative about your current job or department.
