With the current economic climate I would bite the bullet and go to work for them. Everyone is starting at a lower salary because they can. Unless your really willing to lose this position I say swallow your pride and go to work. Only you can decide if the additional money is worth not getting the position.
Congratulations on the new position! Unfortunately, the time to negotiate would have been during the salary see-saw, countering with reasons specifically WHY you deserve the $70,000+. Also, you don't really know what the other managers are making, do you? You could be on the "high end" of pay with your soon-to-be officemates. There are also benefits that are different from money that an employee can provide. Is overtime available? Credit hours or comp time? Are there bonuses? Are awards given for special projects or team projects or special services? Do employees get a special day off like their birthdays? Is it a 9 to 5 job where you can really go home at the end of the day or do they expect you to pull in extra hours and weekend to get a job done?
Forget about what others are making or what those salary indicators say. And don't let anyone tell you that you are worth less than a $ figure. Things are different now depending where you live, the cost of living, etc. as well as your own philosophy on spending. Besides, you don't need to stay at this company forever; just look at it as an opportunity to earn something while scouting around for something else. Good luck in your career!
