As the British government says, Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are constituent countries that form the sovereign nation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Similar to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Kingdom of Denmark. As far as the United Nations is concerned, none of them are 'countries' in the strictest sense of the word.

new zealand would thrive in tourism if it wasnt so far from everywhere , ireland recieves about trebble the number of tourists each year that new zealand does and our tourism product is below what they offer IMO , of course our diaspora is huge and an american from new york is content to merley drink a pint of guinness in connemara

as for the culture in that country , its very young and outside of maori culture , the only culture it has is rugby culture and its about the only thing the country seems to rally around as a community , there doesnt seem to be much social solidarity which is surprising for a small rural country , ireland has a fantastic community spirit in rural ireland , so too does wales and scotland , although to a lesser degree , new zealand does not have this from what ive seen , i think the country struggles with national identity , it strives to be distinct from its more famous neighbour , its more british than australia , i put this down to the much smaller irish influence going back two hundred years but it is more likely down to the fact that new zealand was too small to stand on its own feet apart from england to the degree australia can confidently do
How does the country "struggle with national identity" in everyday terms?

Japan has a history of something called, 'honor suicide' that is over 1000 years old.

Here's a link:

I chose Japan, because any nation where people are committing suicide because of on the job pressure, is in far more trouble than what we have in the USA.

Yeah, once in a while we have an office shooter, but it's nothing like someone jumping off of a building because of job pressures.

Scotland is a country in it's own right. James VI of Scotland came down from Scotland and took the English throne, he gave us the 1st union flag in 1603, i.e. St Georges, Cross of England & St. Andrews Cross of Scotland. When The Kingdom of Ireland merged with the Kingdom of Britain to form the United Kingdom, the St. Patricks Cross of Ireland was added in 1801 to give us the 2nd union flag. Wales is a principality therefore cannot be included in the union flag of the United Kingdom.

It infuriates the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish when UK gets referred to as England England is just one of the countries that makes up the UK and Gt Britain.

everything is relative , i dont mean it struggles in the way yugoslavia did or other countries which broke apart , some might say that canada struggles with its identity , i was in argentina in 2004 and was told by argentinians that the country lacks the kind of patriotism that the uk or the usa has , new zealand is a very young country , identitys are not forged over night

no offense but it infuriates the irish when the term irish gets lumped in with reference to the uk , there are of course a million people on the island of ireland who are british and identify with the uk but they are not irish and would be offended at any suggestion they are , refering to them as northern irish is perfectly fine however

My friends that live in Ulster (Donegal) and close to Ulster (County Leitrim) usually prefer to use the terms "Huns", "Black&Tans" or "Orange Bastards/C**ts" though...

thats not very nice , the black and tans were an elite british squadron who tried to put down the irish rebellion between 1916 and 1922 , they have no relevance to anything anymore

incidentally , three of the nine counties in the province of ulster are part of the republic of ireland , only six of ulsters counties are part of the uk

Unless you're into extreme sports, NZ is the most boring country in the world. It has literally NOTHING going for it, apart from the stunning scenery.
Thanks for the insight. Too many sheep, not enough taxpaying humans?
No exports! Not much of an economy! Is it a conservative gov't, then, since it wants to keep people down?

Well, yeah, if there's not enough people to sustain an economy, and not even enough economic activity (no exports), then funding Native education and all that stuff that developed countries do for their Indigenous people would take up a disproportionate share of revenues. But I do recall seeing NZ fruit and lamb in the markets here, so they do export foodstuffs.

My impression of New Zealand was that it's about surfing. All those beaches. And maybe hiking and climbing, sports-wise.

NZ needs to strike oil off the north coast, like Norway. That would take care of a few things. It would have to be well out of the way of any stray icebergs.
