Sorry, but I'm going to have to side with the OP on this one. I can't honestly say Bali is the worst place I've ever visited. It isn't, by far(see below). But compared to its reputation, it's underwhelming and disappointing. The island itself is very beautiful and the traditional culture interesting. However, the obnoxious nature of the taxi drivers and the local disregard for proper waste disposal do significant damage to my perception of the place.
yeah true your comment but in my opinion this is the worst place in Bali is legian street ( Kuta ), in the night is full of drunken foreign tourist and do not appreciate the local culture ..

I agree there are tourists there that don't respect the local culture and cause problems, however an aspect I found it really uncomfortable was the constant interactions aggressive sales people. Even if you go to a really beautiful region in Bali, It is likely will be encountered by aggressive sales people that will not take no for an answer. Even if you buy something then the person will really pressure you to buy more and that will attract other sales people to come up to you to pressure you to buy stuff they are trying to sell. I have been to other parts of Asia and I have not experienced such aggressive sales people in my life in other Asian countries compared to Bali. It is a pity as Bali has a lot of potential.
Besides that with every negative aspect of Bali, there is a positive. Anyway if you get to know a local they can give you excellent reviews of the best places to Bali to see. their advice was better and more useful than me searching on the internet. Even people who have been to Bali many times will tell you the best places to go and I did take their advice and I was very happy for that. Next time I will reduce my time very touristy spots of Seminyak and Kuta, and focus on exploring other islands in Indonesia besides Bali.
I´ve always found NY´ers to be extremely welcoming and friendly, however they say it how it is like us Scots.
I'd much rather people say it like it is rather than talk in a riddle where you have to figure out what the he$$ they meant. The "Bless your heart" of the South, USA drives me nuts - they think they pulled a fast one on you - that you don't understand that they just insulted you. I give them the stink eye so they know that I do get it.

Oh my, you really DON'T get it. Often, the "Bless your heart" you hear in the South occasionally (not all the time like you hear on C-D, but in real life) IS genuine. It all depends on context. For instance, I am thinking now about that baby girl who caught shrapnel in her mouth in Odessa, TX and if I say, "Bless her heart," I MEAN it. I don't mean it facetiously, I mean it genuinely.
So no, every time someone says "Bless your heart" in the south (which like I said is less common than people on this site would have you believe) it does NOT mean "they think they pulled a fast one on you."
But if you're going around the south giving people the stink eye, you probably deserve whatever they are dishing out. Have fun with that!

True, many southerners are certainly kind and well-meaning, but I'm a native Texan that can admit Umbria hit the nail on the head. The South earned its reputation for passive aggression. People don't just make these things up.
Giving the stink eye to someone who insults you in a covert manner doesn't make you a mean person. Some people just have a naturally lower tolerance for BS, and I personally have far more respect for someone that can tell me directly to my face that they don't like me or something I said/did. Feigning politeness isn't Christian or kind. It's emotionally dishonest. You're undermining the other person's intelligence and attempting to rob them of the situation's reality.
So maybe find another phrase besides "bless your heart"? Because that one has a bad rep. I think most people are smart enough to know when it is genuine and when it isn't.

I do get it - easy to tell if it's genuine whether the "Bless your heart" is involved or not. In the cases that come to mind the aggression was clear long before they blurted the bless your heart thing. I don't get into verbal battles with females - very low class and tacky - so just to let them know that I understand what the bless your heart meant - it was very obvious - I let the eyes do the talking. Just like they had. I'm not argumentative or someone that initiates this kind of interaction but this dumb Northern mentality isn't taken lightly.
I have also heard it where I wasn't sure how it was meant and I let it go. I have also heard it said genuinely ( rarely). I do not just walk around giving nasty looks so you went off the deep end on that one.
For anyone who has not been there, this IS THE ANSWER. The place literally stinks. It smells foul in a way that is hard to describe, perhaps some combination of industry and low tide. On a hot summer day, when you are outdoors, you will get a film of dirt on you skin. At least this is how it was in the 80's. I have never gone back.
**** Newark. Really. As far as I am concerned we have 49 states.
Tijuana is also a ****hole. I will never go back to the place after walking in to a bar for a beer and seeing 14 year old girls stripping on stage. You can't un-see that.
Number three would be Las Vegas. I fully expect god to burn it to the ground and turn everyone there into a pillar of salt.
Manila, Philippines. Overall it was seemed really dirty, gritty, with too much side hustle. Traffic was the worst and heat/humidity oppressive while being stuck in traffic. The airport sucked. Shopping malls were the nicest parts esp in Makati and SM I think is the name. But I dont like going to a mall but seems like the entire population likes going to them. People were right, get out of the city and explore the countryside and beaches. So much nicer.

many interesting and beautiful places in Philippines that maybe people don't know yet and rarely tourists or westerners ( white ) go to visit there because of the lack of promotion and less supportive infrastructure.
