Calcutta strikes me as a place that makes a pit toilet like Mumbai look like a garden.

No, it's just infested with cholera, corrupt politicians, a non-existent sewage system, rivers filled with feces and rubbish, poverty.. I think you get my point? But thanks for being mature, your posts really help to raise the standard of any discussion!

Kolkata is not dirty everywhere. The city has tourist areas and upscale neighborhoods. Here are some pics:

Below are images from the largest celebration in the city, called Durga Puja. Many thousands of artworks like this are on display all over greater Kolkata during this time. All of them are created anew and destroyed every year.

I'm certain that Calcutta has a few islands of modernity, just like many other cities in India.

My experience is only with Mumbai, admittedly, but the problem I have with such places is that to go from island of modernity to island of modernity, one has to pass through shocking amounts of decay, sewage and human misery.

Well, that is true. The pics I posted are more an indication of how good things could be in a city like Kolkata. Change is slow, but over the last 20 years these islands are becoming more and more.

Someone I know has bought me some property (a condominium) in the city near South City mall (I posted a pic of it above). That's why I've become suddenly interested. lol. It's not a bad spot for a vacation home. Now I just have to figure out how to claim my rights to the property as a U.S. citizen.

If that's the kind of vacation you want to take, why not just build a seaside mansion in Haiti? I bet you could do it cheap. Plus no property rights hassles and a shorter flight from the US.
