I might have to give it to the Russians on that one. They're crazy and they just do as they please. Putin should be enough of an explanation for why I think that way, but I could go further.
Hope this is not too off topic, and not trying to start a debate, but I have had several conversations with Argentinians that are put off that we "call ourselves American when that's the name of both continents," and they claim they have just as much right to being called American, and that we should change our name. Anyone else encountered this? Any Argentinians care to offer some input? My response is usually 1) People from the Estados Unidos Mexicanos call themselves Mexican 2) Our official name is the United States of America, as the first country to declare independence in the Americas, it was only natural to claim that name. A group of States united in the Americas? Lets call it the United States of America. What should we call ourselves.. United Statsians?
United States Of America is more of a description than a name.
We should have used the name "Columbia" back when it was being thrown around.
But there's already another Colombia.
Still on the whole Murica thing. Slightly different pronunciation and spelling should do the job. Or we could think of something totally new but still an accurate representation of American history, like Plutocracy.
Change:
Republic of Congo to Kakongo,
Democratic Republic of Congo to Congo.
Hell, change that one back to Zaire.
