Iraq > Assyria/Akkad/Babylonia (any of its historical names)

Italy > Romania (or something like that, something similar to "Roman")
Netherlands > Holland
New Zealand > Zealandia (that's the name of its continental shelf, and it sounds much better)

Absolutely no! For Italy there isn't any other name that can represent the whole country!
Any name that derive from Rome would represent only Rome. During the Roman empire the Romans where quite "egocentric", and so used a name that reminded their capital for their huge Empire, but nowadays this would not make much sense.
Spoiler
About the "egocentricity" of Rome in the ancient time, here there are some old famous epithets for the city of Rome:
- the Urbe = The city
- Caput Mundi = the head of the world
- The eternal city
Anyway, already during the Roman Empire, the territories of the peninsula were known as "Italia" (as France was called "Gallia", Germany "Germania" and so on).
After the fall of the western Roman Empire the territories of the peninsula have been divided into several smaller entities, often ruled by foreign reigns. But during all this period the name "Italia" periodically came out, together with the intolerance for the foreign domination. This kind of ideals were particularly strong during the "Risorgimento", which is the period that leaded to the unification of our country. And, just after the unification, I don't think that they had any doubt about the name they were going to give to their new Nation.
