Finland was the only capitalist country which was able to trade with USSR in big amounts during the Cold War. That was a huge advantage then.

Haha, that was never a possibility. Remaining strictly neutral or becoming a Soviet satellite was the only outcomes. So we chose to "bow towards Moscow without exposing our butt to the West", as a saying was coined.

Greece is not bad, but I'd imagine it to be like Germany or the Netherlands, considering how rich and powerful the nation was in ancient times.

1) Algeria. Seems like the wealthiest country in Northern Africa now, but socially stuck decades behind Morocco or Tunisia. How does it have a higher GDP per capita than those two?

2) How does Turkey have such a high GDP per capita, higher than pretty much every Balkan country and almost on par with Poland and Hungary? Education seems like it's not the best. And east of Ankara the country seems like it's Mordor. How is it possible? Can't be just Istanbul and Smyrna carrying them

3) Why is Ukraine so poor now? I know they've had an awful history, but the eastern part of the country has a lot of industry. And the western part used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire

Russia has no reason to be this poor. It's truly held back by its tribal, backwards mentality. With its abundance of resources it should be as rich as Canada or Australia or even Norway, but beyond the oligarch ruling class it's poor as ****, which is just pathetic.

I've been saying this for centuries lol. Not only resources: largest country, with over 100 million population and no natural calamities. Imagine Japan without earthquakes + 100 times the area and all the oil in the world...they'd be like future space colony.

Well they probably wouldn't because its those events and lack of natural resources that force human beings to innovate. It's funny that, hence why ultra socialist models always fail in the end. Some of the poorest countries or regions within countries are abundant in natural resources.

Most humans need a kick up the backside to be productive.
