I think it's a positive because it enables a person the best means to defend themselves.
Ya, but it doesn't always work out that way. Having a gun in your home, you are more likely to have someone accidentally shoot themselves or a loved one. For a gun to be useful, it must be loaded, close at hand and not locked away. Got kids...good luck with that.
On the street? Well it 's just pretty sad that people live in a so called " free " society, that they feel the NEED to carry a weapon. Actually not sad, pathetic and a failure of democracy IMO.
Guns only give a false sense of security, as many studies have shown that in a real situation the majority of people don't have time to take out their gun before it would be too late. IDK how many of you have fired weapons, but hitting anything smaller than a barn with a pistol is really hard without intensive training. Hitting with assault weapons is OTH easy, but who would want or need an AK or AR-15 at home? I have fired assault rifles, and I'm confident that they aren't anything anyone should have at home.
Fumble towards your (unloaded) gun nervous, heart pumping like hell, and with some luck shoot the burglar which after his/her brain matter is sprouting on your face, ruining. All this while your son and daughter are watching from upstairs. Then you clean your Persian carpet from skull pieces and blood. That's the semi-realistic scenario, the more realistic is your brain matter sprouting by the assailant. The least realistic is a clean movie-kill and you being a hero in the local newspaper.
OK, I get it if you live in an area infested with wolves (which is highly unlikely) and you need a shotgun for deterrent, but otherwise it's just fantasy material or the need to feel really macho and manly because you have a small penis.
Overall, there is a feeling of optimism in America right now. Economic growth is good. The unemployment rate is at a 17-year low. Illegal immigration is down significantly. Crime is much lower now than it was at its peak 3 decades ago. These are the factors that affect most people’s daily lives.
The gloomy period was in 2008-2009. But the country has been resilient and is now in a much better place and things look good going forward.
Is a country where all citizens have to carry a gun really a great country? Wouldn´t it be better if everybody felt safe enough so they didn´t have to carry a gun?
All Americans don’t carry guns. It’s a small percentage. You will hardly notice anybody carrying a gun unless they are law enforcement.
The fear of getting shot is not on most people’s minds. Only criminals and gang members in the worst neighborhoods of inner cities. People are more concerned about getting hit by a car if they don’t cross a street carefully.

I know that too, but it still doesn´t answer the question to why carrying a gun is considered an important thing to make a country great.
Self defense is the big one, and not knowing what the future holds, would be next - we might be living in enlightened times, and with greater security and prosperity, but things can change
All good points (except for the one about democracy), but a person unable to defend themselves from a violent criminal, has been rendered defenseless by the State.
It's odd though, that the only country that equates gun ownership with freedom, is the country that actually needs to have guns to defend themselves. It's a vicious circle in other words.
People in Canada etc do not feel less free. In fact, we feel freer in many respects.

Of course it would. However in the US the propaganda machine has convinced certain Americans that an 18th century amendment about having a militia, is perfectly fine in the 21st century. Some actually believe that massacres like Vegas, are the price to pay for " freedom ".

No, But I don't see the opposite as being true either.

How about open carry states?
IDK, I heard a story where one fired person didn't take it too well, and bursted out in anger. His co-workers joked among them that "he will probably come back and shoot us all up, lol". In Europe, this kind of joke would fly over everyone's head, as it would be so absurd.
And as the US has suffered a lot of mass-shootings, I find it highly unlikely that it wouldn't have affected the subconsciousness of the populace.
Very interesting seeing everyone's opinion. Give's a full perspective on everything. A good read this thread has become.
