I think Tokyo has the most Michelin Stars of any city, however the Michelin guide does prefer fancy intricate food and preperation when compared to more hearty fare.
Japanese food has become much more fashionable and is better known than Russian food, but this is no disrepect to Russian food which can be very good.
Saying that there are some good Russian restaurants in London.
Cuisine: Russian if you include Georgian and Uzbek
Nightlife: Japan most likely. I'm bored of regular bars and clubs. Tokyo seemed to have more colorful options like Robot bars and maid cafes. A little weird but entertaining.
Culture: Russia
Women: Russia
Where to live? Probably Japan since I have lived in Russia.
Wow. This is an old thread and thanks for the reply to my comment from December 2009-almost 9 years ago
Yes, I am aware there are ethnic Koreans in parts of Russia. I've also met ethnic Koreans from former Soviet Central Asian Republics of Uzbekistan- they were moved there from Sakhalin and Primorsky Krai during World War II by Stalin because he feared they would collaborate with the Japanese against the Russians during World War II. Sakhalin (especially) and Primorsky Krai are closer geographically to Japan. Korea was also controlled by Japan during that period.
Its been a while since I started a new thread. But here is the next one. For those of you that have lived in or visited both countries, which one do you think has the better cuisine, better nightlife, more interesting culture? Which one has friendlier women? And if you were forced to choose between Japan and Russia as a place to live, which one would you choose? All opinions and feedback are welcome
Japan wins on all counts. Russian women are prettier but Japanese women are more feminine.
Russia would be a very interesting country except there is one big problem..........it's full of Russians.
Russians are rude, aggressive, nationalistic, anti-democratic, and have no interest in human rights or being part of the larger world community. Racism, misogynistic attitude, and rabid homophobia are not just socially acceptable but encouraged by the government, media, Orthodox religion, and society at large. Russians are so offensive on so many grounds that even visiting it would be painful.
Of course Japan is quite the opposite being a very orderly, peaceful, and refined culture which is why Japan is always viewed very highly by the international community and Russia very poorly and they are reputations that both countries justly deserve.

Do you even know any Russians?
Russia is an incredibly diverse country. Your generalizations are ridiculous and speak volumes as to what you actually know about the place. I had every reason to dislike the place but living there taught me not to make ignorant assumptions about such a vast place with a long, complex history.
Is Russia perfect? Absolutely not and it's a valid argument that it is headed in the wrong direction but your reasoning is based in ignorance.
Ask some Koreans or Chinese of a certain age how "peaceful" the Japanese can be then get back to me on that. You also want to accuse Russia of misogyny and hold up Japan as an ideal? You have to be joking.

Old thread, but;
I dislike Japanese food, love Russian food though.
Both have great nightlife in my opinion, but alcohol is cheaper in Russia, lol.
Both have a lot of history and culture, but I have a much greater interest in Russian culture.
Friendlier women? I think they may both be friendly, but I found Russian women communicate and interact more with foreigners than Japanese women. I can be out and about in Russia and in Russian bars and meet Russian women, but rarely did it happen in Japan when I was there, I actually did not see all that many single Japanese women out in the nightlife in Japan.
I would choose Russia to live, but I have lived there before and even speak Russian, lol. I like Japan, it is an outstanding society, so clean you can eat off a bathroom floor, but it did not ever feel like "home" to me.
